I had Earthlink billed to my mother's credit card while I was in college. It was great that Mom helped me with some of my bills while I made the effort to secure employment and get on with life. I finished college in May 2009 and got a job. In June 2009 I cancelled my Earthlink account, had my phone disconnected, and I moved out of my apartment and in with some relatives. Little did I know, but Earthlink continued to bill my mother's credit card. She thought that the bills belonged to an Earthlink account that my father had. Neither of us knew that Dad had cancelled that Earthlink account the year before. I discovered that the Earthlink account was still being billed to Mom's credit card. I called Earthlink and they said that I had agreed to a webmail account with the multiple e-mail addresses. I said that I called Earthlink and had them cancel EVERYTHING since I was planning to have my phone disconnected and that I did not plan to use Earthlink anymore. I told them that I already had a Yahoo account and that it worked fine for me. I told Earthlink that I was in a different industry where I would not need any type of special e-mail service. I told them that I was struggling financially and that I was slashing all unnecessary expenses. After the sales person in India tried several times to persuade me to keep my account, he finally agreed that it would be cancelled. Then he tried one last time to persuade me to keep the account. I said, "Absolutely not. I don't want to pay a penny for internet service. My Yahoo account that is free is all I want." Well, the con artist on the other end of the phone didn't really cancel my account! He just modified it a bit and kept billing my mother's credit card! I haven't used that account since June 30th 2009 since I had no idea that it still existed! The reps I argued with today were just horrible! They said, "You do not check your credit card each month for invalid charges???" They were blaming ME for not catching the con job they pulled. They are the ones who are committing fraud! My poor mother is at wits end wondering why she didn't see that there was a problem. She thought that the charge belonged to my Dad. Now that my Dad has passed away, we're trying to figure out how to cancel all these things he had been ordering over the Internet all these years. My mother is accustomed to receiving multiple page credit card bills because of all the vitamins, health care products, small novelties, and home improvement items that my father used to like ordering. The $35.50 a month from Earthlink did not seem to be that big of a deal because she thought it was something my Dad had subscribed to. Since it has added up to over $500.00 in possibly fraudulent charges applied to her credit card from Earthlink, we're both furious about this!!!! I am so angry!!! I'm going to writing a long letter disputing the charge for this month, plus I'm going to ask for all the charges back to July 2009 be credited back to this credit card!!! Those outsourced nationals of India are really horrible on the phone. They seemed like they were really pulling a con job on me and I'm ballistic about it!!!
