Hey,

SUMMARY

This site's primary business is signing you up for their free service and then secretly billing them monthly afterwards until you explicitly cancel. The cancellation process is deliberately obfuscated.

Their shady practices are common and reported all over the net.

--------

Two months ago Nationwide recommended me www.creditreport.co.uk. A scam site cheating you out of money- they're probably passing money to each other under the table.

This website has a huge banner and a big button saying Get your FREE credit report. I hesitated at the part where I enter my card details but decided to trust it since the bank recommended it. It says I'll be charged after the first month, after the trial has ended.

After signing up the credit report is pathetically poor which just says my credit rating is "green"- you can't even see specifics.

Here's the thing- I then spend 30 minutes SEARCHING throughout the website to cancel my account and find NOTHING. I don't have a telephone and I assume that any charge made will be done with my consent since there seems to be no way to de-activate my account. Being self employed and busy I don't have time to chase them up and confirm this, but I trust it since it's recommended by an authority.

Today (2 months later) I've been billed a submarine charge of 6.99 for a service I logged into ONCE. No warning email or nothing. I can't even log in! When I call back in they tell me the info to cancel an account was on the website.

- Click on the tiny tiny grey link at the bottom of the main page that says frequently asked questions
- A page will appear with 16 questions- none on closing the account.
- Search in the search box for "close experian account"

Look at the FAQ page. The search box isn't connected to the page. Trawling their entire site to see how to close your account you will miss it.

I'm also insulted by being told this is "obvious" and "blatantly easy" to find. F*** you.

I'm told it's a credit monitoring service and I'm paying them to monitor my credit report. Rubbish. My credit record already existed in their records when I first checked it. The call lady says I need to contact their complaints department.

Well this website, ALL of their departments are handled by telephone EXCEPT complaints which is handled by email. Does that seem shady or what?

I did not use this service for TWO MONTHS since I logged in and got no warning of the charge. They make bank on people like me signing up, charging them these small charges and then people just letting them have it.

I want my money back. What actions can I take to get back that 6.99? Is there anything I can do for small amounts like this?

The banks wonder why no one trusts them- it's from pulling shady s**t like this.

In the UK Experian, Equifax and CallCredit all offer free credit reports direct from their websites.  You do have to sign-up for a free trial but you have a 30 day cancellation period.

I have to admit they all make it a bit difficult to find out how to cancel your credit report free trial.  I find this website useful as it has the contact details for all three credit reference agencies:

They also have a great comparison of the three agencies here:

After clicking on "GET YOURS" from the homepage, you're taken to a sign-up page.  To the right hand side of that page is this box of text:

Offer Details:
Simply click "Submit" on the next page to claim your FREE Credit Report and Score and activate your trial membership in High Credit Score. After your 10-day FREE trial, the membership fee of 14.95 per month will be charged by High Credit Score to the credit card you use today, and then automatically charged each month at the then-current monthly membership fee so long as you remain a member. Of course, you can call us within the first 10 days to cancel - you will have paid nothing and owe nothing. Remember, High Credit Score comes with our guarantee - you can call to cancel at any time and you will no longer be charged.

Did you bother to read that?

Obviously not.
