I had a problem with "The Simpsons Season 8" DVD set, and tried to exchange it for a new copy at Fred Meyer's in downtown Puyallup (and yes, I did have my receipt). When I did try to exchange it, I was told at the Photo Electronics department thatn I would have to process the return/exchange at the main desk.

When I tried to do so, they refused to do so because the one that I had was previously opened, and was not allowed to be exchanged. I told the female at the Customer Service desk that there was a problem with discs two through four (one episode would play, then would either lock up or shut off my DVD player); but since they did not have another one to exchange, that I would have to take it to another store and deal with it.

As a former employer of Fred Meyer, I was taught to take care of the customer. This person was not helpful at all (as to where I could exchange this defective piece), and the fact that I had to drive to another store to exchange this item (which was subsiquently defective as well - has the same problem) has let me know that Fred Meyer does not appreciate its customer base. I have not step foot in a Fred Meyer store since then, nor do I plan on entering another Fred Meyer store anytime soon (if at all).

I have experience with this situation myself. I purchsed a defective CD from Best Buy and they were out of stock, so I was refused the exchange because it has to be the same title. Then I found out that it is a manufacturing issue. I contacted the manufacturer and they sent me a refund check in the mail. Unfortunately due to piracy problems in the DV/CD/Software industry the companies that sell this merchandise have no choice, but to follow the regulations. It seems harsh on the customers end, but I can also see the retailers side as well. There are too many people out there copying everything and getting away with it. Consumers just need to be aware and understand.

If you have had the same problem, multiple times with the same title, it needs to be taken up with the manufacturer. Fred Meyer's can't help you with that. Besides, it's just common sense.
