I was experiencing issues with my yahoo email. I googled a number for yahoo and a number came up as yahoo email rescue. I dialed that number and was connected to someone in India with difficult accent. They had me shut down my computer and put it in safe mode. They had me go to logmein123.com and enter a 6 digit code. It took several tries but it finally connected. That allowed them remote acess to my computer and they explained that I had a serious issue where all my programs had been stopped and I only had two programs running but this was very serious and needed to get fixed immediately. They showed me where foreign addresses had hacked onto my computer and we couldnt see what they were doing but they could see what we were doing.
They showed me that there were 54,000 some hits and compromises and others were waiting to log on. She said I could take it to a Microsoft store for $350-$400 and they would keep the computer for 5 days and no warranty or security. The online tech would only cost $199 for one or two years tech support and would have my work done in two hours. I explained that I had to leave but they convinced me it would be quick and he would get someone on it right away. He gave me a screen to enter my cc info and then gave me a tracking number and showed me the receipt. Then he transferred me to a tech who then asked if my computer had a password. I didn't know so then he called me back later asking me to sign something digitally. I told him I didnt want to sign anything as I didn't know what the signature was for. He ended up signing my name as I couldn't get the mouse to work and I told him we just needed to skip this step. After he signed, he hung up.
He showed me that they found the problem and it was pum hijack so he had used hippo c cleaner, then he "fixed" the problem and only had a 20 min download to finish and complete his work. After he was done, he did a "test" to show me my email was working. He had me change my yahoo password and security questions which raised my concern as he was ae to see all my info. The other guy had been able to see my cc info as well, so my warning bells were going off but I was already that far in. They finished and I had to leave so when I got to my sisters house, she felt it was a scam so we googled the number I originally called 800-926-0374 and it said that this was a fraudulent site and yahoo never asks for money and to contact my financial institution immediately. I called and disputed the charge, cancelled that account, changed my email passwords, and only used my sisters computer to do the changes as I didn't know what they had downloaded. I found my security trend micro in my trash folder and tried to uninstall their download but it wouldn't uninstall. I downloaded a cleaner which uninstalled it but I still am taking it to the geek squad to make sure my computer is safe. Fortunately I have a plan with them already. Fortunately I have an alias email name so hopefully this doesn't get blown into an identity theft situation. Their support number is the 800-941-7590. Dont trust these people. Fortunately I caught this right away before using any banking sites.
