Hideaway Campground Despicable Treatment of Customers Mears Michigan
When my group and I arrived at Hideaway Campground, we were made aware that we couldn't have a campfire burning after 1AM. What this means is that someone from the staff will come around at 1AM sharp with a watering can and douse your fire, regardless of whether you are cooking or have another light lit so you don't trip in the dark. They will walk up to your fire and put it out without saying a word to you. I find this totally unacceptable.
When my fellow campers and and I re-lit our fire (which I admit was in violation of Hideaway's rules), it was promptly put out again and the maintenance guy threatened to kick us out of the park not only if we re-lit our fire again, but if we did not immediately "go to bed". As an adult, I was extremely offended that an employee of a park I paid to stay at thought it was his right to impose a bedtime on us. We were not being loud whatsoever, so it wouldn't have made a bit of difference whether we were asleep in our tents or sitting in our folding chairs as we were before.
Since we refused to go into our tents and sleep, the maintenance guy told us to leave and called the county sheriff. When the sheriff arrived, he explained that it is within the campground's rights to make us leave since it is private property, but that he had asked the maintenance guy to let us stay until the morning if we promised to go into our tents and sleep. Otherwise, we'd all be arrested for trespassing. So we went to bed.
At 7:45AM the following day, we were woken up and told we had 15 minutes to pack up and leave the campground.
Never in 20+ years of camping in Michigan have I experienced anything like this.
