I purchased a used car from Honda of Superstition Springs and noted several cosmetic defects such as scratched paint. They agreed to discount the car for these items but it turned out there were numerous other mechanical issues that were not disclosed.

While purchasing the car I asked if the car had been fully inspected prior to being put on the lot. They said that all issues that needed to be taken care of were fixed. Being a major dealership I assumed that their statement meant they fixed all issues that were discovered during the inspection. After I purchased the car I took it to my mechanic for a minor item but had them inspect it anyway. Behold - they found numerous serious mechanical issues with the car which were either safety issues or items that if they failed would cause much more damage to other more expensive parts.

I went back to the dealership and told them about these issues. The sales manager acknowledged that they did inspect the vehicle but decided to only fix the items that were legally mandated by state law. They were aware of these other mechanical issues but never disclosed them to me plus the way they answered my questions led me to believe that everything was in proper operating condition. They finally offered me a token 10% discount for them to repair these issues but in the end they basically told me that it was now my problem to deal with and they had no responibility and would not fix these major issues unless I paid for them.

One last item - I asked the sales manager if he would put a young family member of his behind the wheel of this car with the known mechanical issues: he stated that he would NOT put his family member in this car in its current mechanical condition!

The time to have a car inspected is BEFORE you buy it, not after.
