I opened an this account with Orchard Bank last October. I charged approximately $269. I made the payments as billed, and on the third statement, the payment jumped from $10 monthly to $60. I suddenly was overlimit, and was being charged $29 for overlimit and $29 for late payment, when my payment was never late and my account could not be overlimit since being a bookkeeper I regularly checked my available credit before each purchase.

I sent what payment I could and tried to talk to them by phone, being told it must have been an error and someone would call me back with the corrected balance. I have received not calls back regarding their error, and in the meantime they have continued to pad my account with late fees and overlimit fees each month. I continued to write them, email them, talk by phone to try to correct this error. I receive no return calls and form letters, stating they are in the right. My account balance has increased to their benefit to a whopping $736 +. I receive 10 to 20 calls per day harrassing me for the $736.

I have missed one payment--May 2002, because I wrote them I will pay no more until this balance is corrected. Their representative told me tonite, that this balance is so high because I am not making payments. I am sick of it. I have five other credit cards, not overlimit, never late. This account has been a real nightmare. I told them to take me to court because I will countersue for fraud and harrassment. This company needs to be fined and prosecuted in the worse way. I intend to do my best to see them pay for all the harrassment they have brought to me!!!

I agree late fees and overlimit fees can really get a credit card balance outrageously high, but the point is you know the interest rate before signing the agreement and the agreement in fine print does state the policy and procedures behind all fees. The key word is "KEEP", "keep" your balance below the credit limit leaving room for finance charges each month, "keep" away from paying just the min. payment pay more than that or get stuck with the bill for the rest of your life, "keep" the balance as low as possible, try using the card only for making hotel reservations or emergencies, car rentals or making purchasing that require credit card payments. "Keep" paying every month on time! When mailing payments, mail them 10 days before due date, most credit cards does not have a grace period. Remember late fees, and finance charges can put you over the limit so leave that room. The higher the balance and interest , the higher the payment will be. If you are uncomfortable paying your bill over the phone with a check use the internet so don't you don't have to worry about someone stealing money out of your checking acct, do internet payments 4 days prior to due date and always follow up with payments to make sure it posted. This is your money , your credit, protect it.
