HughesNet Deceptive advertising, unethical business practices, lying and cheating consumers Chicago Illinois
As a senior citizen and a previous widow I have been taken advantage of by HughesNet. I was in a rural area where dial-up was the only option. I contacted HughesNet and signed up for their service thinking I would be provided a 'highspeed' connection. I quickly found out that I could not hardly access the internet at all let alone download any items. I call Tech Services at least three times concerning this matter. Each time I was told to check my computer by doing a test program. I was then told that I had exceeded my threshold limit -- I said ..."what threshold limit?"! Tech Svs. told me that I only had a limited amount download limit. I said I was never told about the threshold limit and they then wanted me to 'Upgrade' my service to receive more limits.
I decided I had enough of this absurd information and was angry at their lack of honesty. I decided to cancel my service -- and was told that I would have to pay $760 to cancel. With stern language I advised them I was not paying them one penny. I had previously been told that if I did cancel the cost was $400 minus a $200 rebate which left a $200 balance. I told them I'd be glad to pay the $200, but they still threatened to send it to a collection agency and ruin my excellent credit rating. I told them their company was a sham and they were taking advantage of consumers and I had never done business with such an inept and dishonest company. Also, when I had talked to these people I could never talk with anyone that spoke coherent English. One individual who was chatting with me couldn't even spell. This company should be investigated and forbidden to do business anywhere -- HughestNet is a disgrace to honest American businesses. Everyone should report this company to the Better Business Bureau. Disgusted and disgruntled.
