Hughesnet False Advertising in Commercials and misleading explanation over the phone Chicago, Illinois
We live in a rural area and finally decided to buy a computer but, DSL doesn't come to our area. We had been getting flyers for Hughesnet 40.00 a moth plan for a while and the commercials looked promising, advertising it as faster than dial up, even showing a download simulation where the download only took a few seconds. So we decided it was our only option if we wanted high speed internet. When I called them I was told the reason they could offer us such a low price was we qualified under the fair trade act, because we lived in a rural area that could not get interenet, it wasn't explained to me that a limit was put on how much we could use it. The way it was explained was basically they wanted everyone to have access to the internet and that's why they could offer this to us.
After 3 days with the service I noticed not only does it take forever to download, but the buffering on YOUTUBE was awful, I couldn't even watch a full 2 minute video clip, if I went a day without using it however I found it would speed up.
I feel this is false advertising, the commercials definatly say its faster than dial up and people living in rural areas would benefit from it, in the commercial it even says "Watch that video clip everyone's talking about" All I know is my experience with hughesnet is a bad one. I feel like I've been had, I'd would have never paid them for this service if I'd known it was only going to be fast some of the time, and there use going to be a limit put on my usage. I don't feel as if it's fair, cause at 40 a month it's still more expensive than DSL so I feel we should be getting the same or better service. I don't know whether posting a report will help or not but I have to vent somewhere.
