We attempted to book a last-minute apartment for a four-night stay in New York through Thecheapapartmentsnyc.com via craigslist.com. The website looked professional and the photos appeared nice.

My email query was responded to quickly even though the answer was ambiguous. Via a number of email exchanges Izumi stated she had an apartment available.

Izumi requested $1,500 full payment via paypal or direct debit. As it was an international transfer it would take three days for me to clear and my payment limit was $1,000 for one transaction. This was agreed and I made the payment via paypal, of which Izumi was notified via email.

The night before we were due to leave for NYC I received an email stating that the apartment was no longer available but there was another one at an increased price. Izumi stated that even though she had received notification of my payment she did not have access to the cash and could therefore not book the apartment.

We had no choice but to accept her proposal due to the time restrictions; however, I was then informed that the increase was up to $400 per night. After a number of phone calls and complaints Izumi agreed to rent us another apartment for our first night @ $250 cash. She would find us alternative accommodation for the following three nights. I reluctantly agreed.

On the evening of our arrival, Izumi called to say that she could not find us any accommodation for the subsequent three nights. I expressed my concern and she reluctantly said we could keep the apartment but would have to pay $400 a night (up from $250). I said we were not prepared to pay that price for a $250 per night apartment. She gave me the name of another apartment renter but after 18 hours of calling every couple of hours and leaving messages I still had no reply.

I tried calling Izumi over the next day and left numerous messages with no reply. In the end we gave up, checked out and booked ourselves into a hotel for our remaining three nights (because of the lateness of booking, we ended up paying well over our budget).

On returning home I received an email from Izumi which I found very rude and unnecessary stating that People are coming tomorrow for check in..so please leave the apartment by 11:00a.m If you are still there we'll have to pack your stuff for you and we'll change the keys and leave your bags outside'.

I am currently attempting to get my $1000 from paypal back which should not be a problem. I would not recommend using this site under any circumstances to rent your apartments in NYC as I believe it to be a scam in an attempt to inflate rental prices. It will leave a bitter taste in your mouth of your New York experience.
