Juan Juan Salons are habitually engaging in illegal practices in regardes to labor and treatment of employees.  They do not allow employees to take normal 10 minute breaks, and often encourage employees to not even take a lunch break (they dont specifically SAY this as they know it is illegal, but they often persuade their employees to not take a lunch break on a 9 hour shift by giving them so much work to do there seems to be no time for it).

There are employees who work for the salon on "under the table" terms, specifically the cleaning and laundry persons.  This persons income is not taxed or reported to the IRS, and works for sub-standard pay for this position.

This salon never checked my cosmotology license (a state requirement for the position i was hired for), never took a copy of my drivers license or social security number (they said they had no copying machine), did not process any tax papers upon hiring me, never gave me an employee handbook, and refused to correspond when i contacted them regarding these matters inquiring how i would be paid.

It took the salon six weeks to give me a check. Only after i told them (i had to keep leaving messages with the receptionist) i was going to file a report with the labor department did they suddenly make an effort to cut me a check.  The check they finally delivered was a personal check that  did not include any tips (i was supposed to have received tips in my paycheck for every day i was there helping with clients in a very busy, pricey environment).  The check also automatically deducted a hefty tax amount with no legal receipt of where these amounts were allocated (I am confident this money did not go to taxes or social security).

After speaking with the other employees of the salon and some ex employees,  i realized that these people habitually abuse their employees by over working them, exempt tips from checks, have new employees work "trial days" that they dont get paid for, refuse proper break times, and flat out try to not pay employees.

One last thing i immediately noticed about this salon, is that despite their extremely high prices (amongst the highest in the field for this service) their customer service was terrible.  Clients were often left sitting for long stretchs of time because the head stylist was busy on the phone chatting with her family or double booking her time.  Often times she would leave a client who was paying $400+ for a service with a new assistant doing a lot of the work, while she went and sat in her office eating lunch, on the phone, or taking another client at the same time.   She would then come back and try to humiliate the assistant in front of the client to take the focus off her disappearance.

The owners of this salon often refuse to fix any mistakes that they make, and instead choose to humilate their clients who complain about services that they received.  This behaviour is noted in some of their yelp reviews.  Within a week of being there I was told that nobody in the salon gets along with the head stylist, and none of the assistants devulged that they were receiving any reasonable amount of tips from her (tips are a standard part of the pay for this position).

Given that the reply did not address most of the points noted in the report, it is only more obvious that this business is not acting appropriately.  The behaviour noted (rude, insulting and unprofessional treatment of customers and employees)  is documented in numerous bad reviews on yelp, and the fact that some of their better stylists have moved on to working at other salons.  Ripoff report has another report of a similar experience at this salon.

I stand by every word that was stated here to be truth, regardless of their attempts to be intimidating by calling it "slanderous".  The check that was cut was called a "personal check" by the manager, and despite it being a "business account" was still not done through proper payroll to substantiate taxes with held (this business never took a copy of any identification documents and did not produce a LEGALLY acceptable form of tax receipt).

While employeed at this company, and shortly after leaving I was voluntarily offered information indicating that these practices are known to be common at this particular salon.  Not every person who has this knowledge is going to complain to the labor department of file a report, but that does not make it untrue.  Despite its 4 star rating, several of the reviews here on yelp document others bad experiences with the attitude of this salon (i dont even know how they have 4 stars with so many bad reviews mixed in).  http://www.yelp.com/biz/juan-juan-salon-beverly-hills-2

I am the manager of both Juan Juan locations.  I have contacted Lena (Lina, the alleged writer of this post) and she did not write any such thing. I have written proof she did not write this report. =

I do in fact know who did write this reoport and have plenty of other employees willing to prove her story is innaccurate.  She was never given a personal check. The check was from our business account. This person was also given a handbook her first week of work.  We also have all necessary info regarding her employmnet.  She was caught several times taking breaks thoughout the day while on the clock and did not like our response to that infraction. Each assistant (hourly employee)  is given and must take a 1 hour break if working more than 5 hours, which is documented in our staff member handbook and complys with California labor laws.

All in all this report is false and it is illegal for this person to be using another past employee's name  in sladdering our company.
