When I signed up with Kaplan I was told by the admissions representative that I spoke with that I would owe two payments of $150 on top of what the student loans would cover.
I attended their school for December, then in January I got a bill from them, the first I had seen, that told me that I was late paying the $1,291 dollars that I owed them and if I did not pay it immediately they would send it to collections. I immediately called the school, told them this was the first bill I had ever received, it was four times the amount I was told I would owe and if I had been told the correct amount of tuition I never would have signed up to go to their school. I requested a drop from my classes immediately and was told that I owuld only get half my tuition back. I said that was fine and inquired as to how I would file a dispute about the tuition.
They sent me the form, I filled it out and sent it back to them the next day. Two weeks later I hadn't heard anything so I calle dto find out what the status was. I couldn't find anyone who knew anything about a department that handled disputes and on top of that I was told that I did not get %50 of my tuition back because I had "dropped too late". I talked to a manager who said they would get back to me about the dispute.
Days later, with still no contact, I call back. I get someone who gives me an e-mail address to contact for disputes. So, I send in my dispute again and once again check back with them later fro an update and they say they have no dispute on file for me. Finally I contacted my academic advisor, send him the dispute and a couple of months later I finally have a resolution.
The basics of my dispute were that:
1) I would never have signed up with the school if I had been told the correct tuition
2) I was told I would get %50 of my tution back when I dropped
I wanted my tuition reimbursed. Instead they decided that I would owe them the two payments of $150 that the admission person had originally quoted me, even though they lied about the cost and I had since dropped because of this and it took them months to finally get my dispute to someone who wouldn't lose it.
At this point I just wanted to be done with them, so I asked them to properly update my account ot show the amount due (they still showed $1291), send me an updated bill and I would send them a check. I contact the person they told me to, left numerous voice mails, called the department and they never updated the account. meanwhile they had sent my account to collection for the incorrect amount putting a black mark on my credit report.
Their billing practicies are suspicious in the extreme, they are extremely unhelpful, you have to hound them to get anything done, the people I talk to on the phone are surly and sometimes just downright rude. They do not communicate, I have never received a callback from anyone yet, I have to keep calling them until i can get them on the phone in order to get anything done. I can't say strongly enough that people should stay away from this institution unless they want to get ripped off and get the run around when trying to resolve it.
