LCR Telecommunications Phone Service Scam! Rip-off! Troy Michigan
Watch out for this scam. Part of my job responsibilities involve managing our phone system. I received a call from someone posing as an official representative of our telephone service provider. They called to inform me that they had made a mistake on our account; our phone lines were accidentally moved into a residential billing plan, instead of being in a business billing plan. As a result, they explained, we were technically being billed at a higher rate per phone line. They needed my permission to move the lines back into the "LCR" service.
At this point, I smelled a scam. If they were able to move the lines without my permission, why did they need my permission to move them back? Also, they needed to record my statement, that "I authorize the phone lines being transferred to 'LCR' service." When I asked what is LCR service, they said that's the type of billing plan we're supposed to have, but due to their mistake of changing our phone lines to the residential service, they need my permission to move the phone lines back to "LCR" service.
Anyway, I played along with their game for a little while. I started asking questions that a normal Rep would be able to answer, and this person started geting nervous and fidgety. Eventually I hung up, and called our normal service provider. Sure enough, there wasn't anything wrong with our account. It was a scam. LCR was trying to trick me into switching to their phone service.
I know I shouldn't be surprised, but it's amazing what lengths some people will go to, to make a dollar.
