Mark Tracy’s m/o: Tell you he needs $ to write up a contract, give you a photocopy of his ID, go on for hours about what a devout Christian he is, then call a few days later to try and whittle more money out of you saying he is ready to start work despite producing no contract. Once you request that he produce the contract you paid $ for he starts ignoring your calls.
When you reach out to him in an email he will threaten your life, then bombard your email with nasty, threatening emails, filled with threats and profanity. He will also relentlessly bombard your voicemail with threats and profanity once he loses control. He is a complete nut job that you should avoid at all costs.
My purpose is to warn others and to let you know you should believe the negative reviews on this guy. You can find more on Yelp. I think he would have a lot more negative reviews, but for the fact that he actually threatens people’s lives. Once people see how unstable he is they cut their losses and move on. It’s very tough finding honest guys in this line of business. The best advice I can offer is to Google the name, check on Yelp and if you see negative reviews, heed the warning bells. (Wish I had checked).
Better yet, get a recommendation from a friend or relative. I did not have that option since none had had any remodeling done in recent years. Do not give money upfront for a written contract and do make sure the contract has the contractor’s license number on it. Do make sure all proposed work along with costs is itemized in detail in case they only complete part of the job. Check with your local authorities to find out how much of a down payment you need to give the contractor. In Illinois the BACP says 10 percent. I would avoid finding a contractor on Craigslist and I know for a fact Home Advisor has had contractors with a five-star rating on their website who were in bad standing with their state. Be careful!
