I was laid off work back in March of 2018. I could not pay the premium, so I called to see what I could do. My Insurance was canceled.

I called Market Place to get back on the Insurance a couple months later and I was told my Insurance should have never been canceled, it should have been extended due to my lay off. So there was nothing they could do but reinroll me. The premium tripled and the deductible was 7,000.00$. I could not afford this So I didn't enroll.

Come tax time I owed over$1000.00 because of subsadation I was given was too much, even though I only had the Insurance January- April 10th. The rest of the year I paid for all medical.

This Insurance was just for me, not my husband. My husband is covered by the VA. Yet our income was combined. If I had Insurance through my employer they wouldn't take it out of my husdand's pay.

I called market Place Insurance and they told me to call the IRS.

I called the IRS and they said we don't deal with this, we only deal with collecting what you owe.  Okay so I sign up for Market Place Insurance because it was enforced.

My employer does not insure seasonal help. My husband's employer does not provide Insurance. I could not get on the VA Insurance. I did not qualify for Medicaid.

I have to pay over$1000.00 because I was laid off from work. This is a crime.

The Law Required You to Have Insurance

#2Consumer Comment

Wed, April 03, 2019

In tax year 2018, you are required to have insurance for the entire year.  Now, you had that insurance from January through April 30th (insurance companies by law can't cut off an insured person mid-month).  Now, you determined you could not afford insurance from the company after that - and I understand completely because the insurance purchased through COBRA is fairly expensive.  However, the law is the law.  The penalty of $1000 is substantially lower - I suspect - than the premiums plus any out of pocket costs you would have had to pay if you were insured.

Having said this, and the job market the way it is, there should have been no reason you could not have secured employment from somewhere else - which would likely include insurance.  I mean there are more job openings today than there are unemployed people.  Even if the job paid a little less - the value is in the health insurance.  By doing this, you could avoid the penalty and be insured.

Now in 2019, you are not required to have health insurance, so if you decide to forego purchasing insurance for the calendar year, then there is no penalty.  However, I would consider finding somewhere else to work because life does happen.  Best of luck to you...
