MDG Kingston Ripped Off For Forty Bucks. Kingston Ontario
Background:
The saga begins on the morning of Tuesday 2 June 2009. I was having some minor problems with web pages loading slow, error msgs like "not enough memory to run this application", possible tcp problem, noisy puc fan, etc and wanted to have these items checked out.
I looked up MDG Computers in Kingston Ontario and found the store here http://www.mdg.ca/en/locations/?store=ki where I found the istore at http://www.mdgistore.com/ where I did a search for "ram" and found what I thought to be exactly what I was looking for to increase the ram for my pc - Kingston Technology ValueRam by Kingston 1GB 800MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 DIMM (Kit of 2) $24.25 (CAD).
I looked up the store address and found the following information:
Store / Service Centre Hours:
Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 7:30 PM
Saturday 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Sunday Closed
I then got in my car and drove to Kingston arriving at 6:35 pm just in time to find that they were closing. The tech on duty took the extra few mins to let me drop off the pc as I was on my way to Toronto. After some discussion it was decided that if all else failed they would do a "complete" resinstal of the op sys - Win XP Pro. We did not discuss the ram purchase at the time. I just left a list of possible problems as above and proceeded on my way.
The next morning I called the store and spoke with a dif tech and confirmed the approx price of the ram and told them to go ahead and install the additional gig of ram.
I picked up the pc on the 9th and was told that the addition ram was $65.00. At the same time I was advised that the HDD had 4kb of bad sectors and that failure of the HD was imminent. total bill to format and reinstall op sys, etc came to $220.35 (about half the cost of a new pc from Dell).
Needless to say, 4 kb of bad sectors isn't going to cause HD failure. I didn't just get off a turnip truck. The misleading information I received from this organization has convinced me never to deal with these people again and I would not recommend anyone else to either.
The long and the short is: The pc still loads web pages slow, the fan is still noisy, and the pc generally is not operating well regarding opening and closing programs and internet speed. Last but not least, I must say that if it had been a problem with something else and fixable for the $40.00 there would be no problem with paying the freight.
