I was an independant contractor for this company in 2010. I did if for 2 weeks and went to a location where I knew companies were being ripped off on their processing. I made $6800 in 2 weeks and had a residual income of $579 for a year.
I found a competitive advantage and I executed on it. Don't blame a company because you couldn't close sales. Blame yourself for not being able to 1: Connect to the prospect 2: Establish Trust 3: Establish need for Product 4: Close sale. If you can't do that, that is your fault nobody elses.

We appreciate the feedback and thank you for recognizing that we can indeed save businesses money on their processing needs. In regard to concerns with agents being treated unfairly, the agent position at MSD is all about learning how to become a business owner. We focus on hard work and determination in an effort to train entry level people into becoming future business owners.
Each agent that markets and sells our products and services signs agreements that are transparent in how agents will be paid, as well as their relationship with MSD. Further, each of our agents must adhere to the MSD Code of Ethics which is a strict guide on how agents must act ethically in their order to be an active agent of MSD. If you would like to discuss specific complaints about an owner, agent, or office, I would be happy to personally assist you. Please call our corporate office and ask to be transferred to Legal if you would like your complaints addressed with more specificity.

Yes my original complaint regarding fees was eventually addressed and corrected - but only after filing complaints here, the BBB and the attorney general. It was not a great experience and certainly not immediate.
Based on our experience - I would still stay away from this company. I do not need the headaches of dealing with them. I do not need people like Julia attacking me publicly either.

Sharon is correct. Merchant Services Direct is a shady company, and seems to operate like a typical Pyramid Scheme. A person buys into the scheme and although "associated" with Merchant Services Direct, they generally do business under a different name (for example, "Excel Marketing Solutions" in San Diego). And the only way the "owner" can make money is by tricking people into working for nothing.
There is a "loophole" in the minimum wage law that allows "outside sales" people to be paid nothing (aka "commission only"). This makes sense for products that actually sell, but is a total abuse with Boiler Room products and services that require deceptive, high pressure tactics.
There is undoubtedly misrepresentation of profitability, and misrepresentation of earnings potential. Any company with a legitimate and respectable product or service will pay you minimum wage as a "draw" against commission, and they will reimburse you for the use of your own car. This scam company does neither.

The fees this merchant is referring to were assessed due to a technical error, an error he was informed of. He also received a full refund the moment we were informed of the error. We dont understand why this merchant would feel it was necessary to post this as we have been completely cooperative from the beginning of our business relationship, or why this merchant feels its necessary to personally attack the independent sales representative he worked with. In any case, this complaint was completely resolved, and we apologize for any inconvenience this technical error caused.

I worked here a few weeks, and almost immediately realized it wasn't for me. Did you know that they're payment structure is a scam itself. This company scams they're own employees not their customers. The agents only get paid based on a small, small percentage. If they don't give you a set-up fee, they don't eat. The fortunate thing is that they do usually help small businesses, unless you had a shady rep. My trainer was more than pleased with herself for being the only girl there, and she treats everyone like dirt. The first week I was out I only signed 2 accounts, which means I make practically nothing, and when I got back to the office I was congratulated like I had done awesome. I had texted my boss the weekend after Thanksgiving to tell him of my lack of success and he was pleased with how well I did. they are 100% commission based and only get paid off of what we sign...the phone earns us no money, and we have to be rude since everyone we call is awful to us. I really wanted to help people, but the agents can't make money and help the businesses, and the stakes are too high. The boss is great, but it's all a lie. The rates are real, but the basis is screwed up. I made 200 dollars in 4 weeks....who can live on that? This company is no good, and that's why I left...-DG

I am unsure if that last guy even knows who he is talking about, or who exactly his merchant account provider IS. He mentioned Total Merchant Services, a completely DIFFERENT company than MSD...which was whom the original complaint was supposedly about. We switched to MSD awhile back and yes, we were offered a standard 3 year type agreement, like every provider has (not 5 years, or unusual, like he stated). MSD has no annual or monthly service fees, just a $5 statement fee...and thats it! And as far as that set up fee...duh. Those nice folks cant work for free, they charged us 'big' set up fee too...about equal to about only two months worth of savings.
Hey, it takes money to make money right? YES, in my world it does. So what if they charged a set up, they were right were right to. The savings they offered us more than made up for the cost of switching providers... within only 2 months. Beyond that, we have saved more than $3000 since we started with MSD only 10 months ago. That's $3000 we wouldn't have had in our pockets had it not been for Merchant Services Direct!
I know that there are many 3rd party card processing services out there, that WILL take advantage of the gullible or ill informed, but MSD has proven to me that they are not one of them. They have served my business and many other surrounding merchants businesses, very well indeed.
It almost sounded to me from what that fella said, that maybe he had dealt with some other similarly named company...also he stated that he WAS saving money, just not as much as he had hoped for, so who knows. He obviously didn't look at the whole big picture. If that guy chose to lease his equipment for that $99 mo. instead of just buying it, that explains everything. Everyone knows it costs more in the long run to lease than to buy outright. Plus, leased equipment is always locked out, because it's on lease...and that lease was HIS choice!
Please take care to be informed, I did my homework and chose MSD. I am glad I did... and I ask that anyone, before they jump onto any ole' passing band wagon, please just be sure it really is the one that they want and mean to ride!

Merchant Services Direct is not affiliated with MPI, and we are unsure as to whether or not this consumer has had any business dealings with our company. He mentions a sales person contacted him about better phone services, which is not a service we provide. Our sales agents all leave business cards with their contact information listed to each of their merchants, and if anyone reading this would like to contact our company, they can do so by calling 877-928-0305.

My take on this ( and other scam sales persons) KNOW what they are up to. since we got screwed over by mpi and their leasing company ( close to $4k for termial lease)
we now demand to see id from every sales person that comes in our business trying to sell something
( not their company id, their drivers lic) we even send someone out to get their car lic plate info)
I explain to them, ( if they actually give us the info, as most leave here like their a*s in on fire once we ask for their personal info) that if they are trying to scam us, or we don't like the service we will know where to find them, and not deal with the company, but them directly.
I also tell them ( if they are still here) its only fair, since they know where we are just by showing up on our property. this eliminates a lot of b.s. in the long run.
just recently some turkey come in here trying to tell us he could provide us with better phone servic plan, when we demaned his dirvers lic for proff of id, ( he noticed we took down his car lic info) he took off insuch a hurry, he sideswiped the dumpster in our lot. ( no problem for the dumpster, but his passenger side mirror is still here incase he wants it back)
I say dont let these kind of crooks get away with anything. they are no more than common criminals, they just carry a note book rather than sneak in your back door to rob you.

These guys make harassing sales calls to our offices on a regular basis. It's hard to pin them down but they finally identified themselves as Eschelon Merchant Services (though it wouldn't surprise me if they lied about that, too).
However, the script and m/o are identical to what's been described, above.
Their persistence turns into rudeness and a total disrespect for your time (they keep calling back if you hang up on them - even when you're polite about it). I suspect they have some kind of internal contest to see which telemarketer can take the most harassment back from someone they call (of course, that's only a theory).
I believe the best thing you can do to discourage their behavior is to waste their time in return - I just put the phone down and let them talk as long as they want until they hang up - and also to take a few minutes to tell others what a bad experience you had with them, too.

I work at Merchant Services Direct and have gone through the interview process, and I made it!
For every place that has to call people, they have a script and they call people they might not know. That's what cold calling is. To let you know, Becky is a great person. Why you dropped her name in here, i don't know, except for the fact that she is awesome! :)
A lot of businesses are interviewing tons of people, and in a place so populated in Portland, you are gonna have a lot of people looking for maybe 4 openings. That's why it's an easier process to have group interviews, and hopefully at least one stands out from that crowd.
In my interview there were two other people who joined me and we were all seeking a job opportunity. I figured I would give it my best and show my personality anyways, but this was a job I had researched before submitting my resume. I never go to a job simply because it's a job, but rather a place that I want to work in.
I saw right away that people were nice, of course I was nervous, but I saw it as what I had read about---a great environment to work in. I was called back for a day of observance, learned the training basics, and even studied what I learned all that day! (im an over achiever, but I really wanted this job. I mean, I gave a cover letter with a plastic slip over it, haha).
What they told me they were looking for was work ethic and a positive attitude. at the end of the day, I was hired, and that night I celebrated! This was a big accomplishment, because it was something I really wanted!
First of all, I am sorry that you saw this place as a company with "shady practices". Let me clear some things up for you and hopefully this helps!
In your interview, they answered your question. You asked how we get paid. the company's rates for processing are half a percent, a statement fee, and .08 cents transaction fee. which this is a low rate for the industry. You might not have learned that from an interview, but if you were actually looking for a career like this, then on your day of observance, we would have filled you in on why that is and the commission structure. It is a commission-paid job and you make your own money.
Furthermore, when you heard people on the phone calling businesses, that is correct. why we say in our cold call reading, "we need to speak with the person who handles the merchant account", is because they are the person who would best understand what we are talking about.
I mean, it's useless talking to someone who isn't. Most of the time, people don't know anything you try to tell them about it, but if they are the person who handles the merchant account, then they are the ones who actually look at the merchant statements and specialize in those things, so they understand when you say, "processing company".
When you go to an emergency room, you don't rely on the receptionist to take you back to a room, check out your wounds, patch you up and send you out the door fixed, right? Although receptionist are very helpful, their job is to inform a doctor and nurse who would be able to help you, and then the doctor would see you because they specialize in that.
Overall, our interview process isn't "shady". In fact, it's a normal process for a company, and I hope I have cleared this up for you and everyone else.

So, This morning a man and a scankily dressed girl came into our office to talk to the owner of the company who was sitting next to me. They started talking about the credit card machine and how he would save our company money. Interestingly enough he was loud and cracked jokes and I just kind of thought he wasn't very professional so I just listened to them and the other people in the our office talk. My boss asked the girl what she was doing here and she said she was "in training" which I am sure she was really there just as a distraction. Somehow it was brought up were the salesman was from and he said Spokane WA, which wouldn't have meant anything strange to me until now. The more the guy talked the more suspicious I became. I am the IT girl here and he had the name Merchant Services Direct on his shirt so I decided to type it right on in to my search and this was the first thing I clicked on, I showed it to my boss after they left of course.
We are in California I was just curious as to if they could be related. I do know that the CEO of this company is Shane Hurley and lives in Spokane and started the company in 07 as a 26 years old. These people today came from San Diego I am thinking it is the same company especially after reading all of your guys experiences with them.
Also, I do believe that all of the comments defending this company are most likely that a employee did it or the company paid someone to go and write good reviews like most companies do. I would love anyone elses comments or information!

Before I rebuttal I want everyone to know YOU CAN CONTACT YOUR CURRENT PROCESSING COMPANY AND THEY WILL GIVE YOU A RATE REDUCTION. Inform them that you are considering cancellation because you were contacted by a independent sales rep who offered you INTERCHANGE +.02% with a $0.05 transaction fee for debit and credit, No customer service fee, no statement fee, and a free machine. If there are any other monthly fees you see on your current statement tell them the reps offer also wiped out those fees. I have successfully done this myself. Now, to my rebuttal it seems that YOU are misinformed. How is is possible for you to say that Greg saved any specific dollar amount when he doesn't specify how much he paid during the previous month with the previous company or how much he paid with Merchant Services direct. He only stated that he saved $37 over his previous company. Also he stated that he processed the same with MSD as he did the previous month with the prior processing company. I would be pissed off too if I was told I was going to save $200 and only saved $37. To top it off only saving $37 doesn't cover the $99 a month he has to pay for 4 years. That must be a machine lease. So in essence he is paying $62 more per month than he was paying with his previous company. I am a local business owner and I network with many Washington and Idaho business owners. I have been told of many horror stories related to this company. I have also come in contact with a few people who were previously employed by MSD. This troubled company is not just plagued by employees who will do anything to make a buck. Its the owners of the company who hold the carrot. I've been told that the owners of this company will lie to employees and customers to ensure a profit. That they have little class and conduct themselves extremely inappropriate in and out of the office. I assume that if you are reading this that you are doing your homework to make sure that you will be making a sound financial decision for your business. I and many others suggest that you choose to run fast in the opposite direction. Remember there are PR companies that write positive reviews for $. This company may have as Anthony Smith says plenty of completely satisfied customers. Regardless of that fact there is a growing number of businesses that are completely unsatisfied. Are you willing to gamble thousands of dollars on the word of a money hungry sales rep who will say anything and provide misleading documentation in an attempt to get you to sign on the dotted line? Peace of mind is what we all are looking for in business. One less thing to worry about so we can pay more attention to profiting. My suggestion, skip the independent sales reps and go with a processing company you can OR already trust. A few dollars in savings is not worth jeopardizing my piece of mind. I hope this helps! Also if I remember correctly the CEO and CFO of the company are Shane Hurley and Kyle dove respectively.

We too had a very poor experience with Merchant Services Direct. They are, as reported, a rip off company. After spending a very frustrating morning I finally received a document to fill out and fax back to the 'representing' company to close the account. Problem is, Merchant Services Direct continues to bill us with a minimum discount and statement fee even after the account was requested to be closed. They also acknowledge they have received this closing request. We NEVER initiated any transactions through them. Further, the 'representative' did not even leave his card.
The rep stated they could integrate to our POS system (he probably tells that lie to everyone). He said the IT guy would call before the account was set up to verify. Next thing we heard from them - a crappy terminal and a statement. When I related all of this to customer service at Merchant Services Direct, more than one person mind, they just could not give a whit. Call your rep they said and gave that name and number, OK so the rep at that shady company didn't offer any help either. This is great customer service.
So if a rep from Merchant Services Direct comes calling, my advice would be to ask them to leave and never return! If you want a great deal on credit card processing go look for it yourself, do not listen to any of these 'reps'. Most are simpletons who know very little outside of the popular POS systems.
I have filed a "General Consumer Complaint" complaint with the Attorney General as mentioned previously. I am not a disgruntled employee. I AM a consumer who will likely run off any merchant services rep who comes calling from now on.

This company is terrible! Starting with a smile and promises of low rates and easy customer service, it all becomes a joke when you realize your 2 year lease was really for 5 and then the constant cons of trying to get you to resign- the sudden spike in rates and the sudden appearance of fees that are due because your contract is up (not the 2 year, but the 5 year).
The machines are security blocked to prevent a different company from using them (this is of course the machine that you've spent $2000 for--of course the only reason you would need to change the information on the machine is if your bank account has been accessed by this company (and for you die hard supporters of Total Merchant Services) is the real power behind the scenes: Lease Financial group... check out the blogs and reports on them, those will make your hair curl. So after you need to change banks so your account isn't directly being withdrawn, your new bank needs to enter their information into the machine that you "own" and can't because of the security block that was entered, and entered where... Total merchant Services, why, because they promise to give you the best rates around with all the bell and whistles to boot.
In feeling like a dope for signing up with these criminals to begin with I started looking for information on their activites, and guess what... I'm not the only one. They target small businesses and make promises they have no intention of keeping. I'm surprised there hasn't been a class action law suit yet, but I'm sure there will be one within the next few years.
If you've been cheated and robbed by this group, please contact the Attorney General's Office and file a formal complaint. Yes, it's time consuming, but in the long run it will save you. Here is there web site: http://www.atg.wa.gov/ContactUs.aspx
Given the amount of folks I've spoken to about this company, don't believe any of the so called positive reviews: "best company ever", "never had trouble with them"... it wouldn't surprise me at all if those positive reviews were employees of the company.

Told me he was going to sign me up for one thing that I agreed to but then did a totally different thing and the company is not willing to do anything about it. I've called them out on everything and they just tell me that there is no more to discus. I've dealt with a lot of bad companies but never any this bad. Ya Clint was nice when he came into my shop and he looked nice and sounded nice and treaded you like his oldest buddy, even bought stuff from my shop. So basically, I saw this report and was pretty shocked to see that someone would actually stoop this low to criticizingly this company's ethics. Regardless, I have used this company for quite sometime now, and have MANY neighboring company's that go through Merchant services direct as well. The gentlemen who came to me, were very kind, very business like and saved me a ton!
I would defiantly read more reviews than this ripoff report before deciding to NOT go with this company. The savings are great, and this person just sounds like their goal was to ruin the reputation due to their own issues from working there. Anthony Smith, IS a great talker I agree but what great sales man isn't? It's what sales men (ladies) do. It is their job.
All in all, any company whom makes a reasonable amount of money a month, that does not take advantage of this program is not trying to save money, if you want to save money... go with Merchant services direct, I save almost 3 hundred dollars a month. This company truly wants to help the economy and how better than saving company's a bucket load of money each month?
I have written this because one of my good friends told me they had turned down this offer because they have read reviews online that state that the company is a scam, I was pretty upset as I feel a sort of protection for this company. This is a good, but unrecognized company.

Hello,
I applied for a job that was advertising a new merchant services office that was opening and all positions were available. I applied for a position hoping to get a customer service position.
The company listed was Merchant Services Direct, Greater Portland Merchant Services.
10725 SW Barbur Blvd, Suite 102
Portland, OR 97219
1-877-928-0305
1-509-252-0519
A Becky Strantz called me in for an interview, the person I was to interview with was Dustin Gluekert.
Upon arriving to the office building suite, it was set up as a call center. There was one main room with a couple of private offices surrounding the bullpen. There were about 12 or so cubicles in the bullpen. Most offices usually have their network routers and switches in a dedicated room, this place looked like it was set up in a hurry, it was in front of all the cubicles with one main printer fax machine next to it. This office looked to me to be set up as a temporary location.
I was waiting for an interview with 3 people, more people were coming in every 10 minutes. There was no one to greet us, just a room full of mostly males, about 6 of them.
While waiting I could overhear the conversations that were going on between the company and the customer. The following are some of the things I overheard:
"I am with your merchant services company and I would like to discuss a change of rate with you"
"I need to discuss your merchant services account, are you the person I need to talk to"
"There have been changed in your merchant services account that I need to notify you about"
"Is there anyone available to talk to regarding your card processing services"
"There are new requirements that you should be notified about processing card transactions"
When I was brought in to talk to Dustin Gluekert I was already concerned about the situation. Upon talking to Dustin he talked about the position, talking about a great opportunity to work for his company.
He said he was a wholesaler of credit card processing services, where most company's pay anywhere from 2-4% per transactions, they offered wholesale prices of 0.5%. He said his services were easy to sell because of the great savings his company provided. That most of his guys earn about 1200 a week. I asked him how his company could offer a 0.5% rate and maintain his workforce and overhead costs, at that point he asked me if I was a person that was open to new ideas and a team player.
He said that Monday - Wednesday they cold call small to medium sized company's to set up appointments. In these appointments we attempt to sign a new contract with the company for Merchant Services Direct to be their credit card processing provider.
I again asked how a merchant services company could only charge 0.5% per transaction to small to medium business and cover overhead costs, and he asked me if I was interested in making money or not.
There is something very wrong with this company, they would not answer my questions as an employee.

As im sure anyone who is reading this can imagine regardless of how great your product or services really are there is always bound to be a few un happy or bad apples out of the bunch. I personally have been in the industry, and with merchant services direct, for what is almost three years now and have helped over 300 clients (industry specific refferals available upon request) save a considerable amount of money on there Credit card proccessing systems. I have been a member of several different Chamber of commerce and have worked my hardest to make sure that every interaction that i have with a merchant works out to better there current situation.
A few thing's that i would like to point out that i beleive discredits Mr. "Greg" is that at the end of his report he states simply that he saved $37.00. A little odd to me that he makes a rip off report and concludes it with " it only saved $37 from my last bill and I processed the same amount as last month! " Also and more importantly i think the fact that we have only one of these so called "rip off reports" and a track record with over 2000 satisfied clients speaks louder than anything Mr "Greg" has to say about myself or my company.
In conclusion if your thinking of switching your currrent processing system to merchant services direct and are simply "doing your homework" (which i encourage), i and my company, are more than happy to furnish any references that i beleive will make you feel more at ease with making the transition. Please feel free to contact myself with any questions you may have about our service.
Thanks for your attention and understanding.
Sincerely
"THE GREAT TALKER"
