There is a long standing conflict of interest within the insurance industry.  For them to make money requires that they avoid paying claims.  In my ripoff they inaccurately name components in a named policy and thereby reduce the possibility of encountering a valid claim.  My instance involves a sunroof where the policy names the motor.  However, there is no 'motor' component.  There is a module that contains multiple components one of which is the motor and in the event that any component fails the module fails.  The problem is that none of the components can be replaced individually as they are a single module.  Mercury will replace the module if the motor component fails but will not replace the module otherwise.  This is not something one would even know before but it is a self serving technicality couched in impropriety.  Next time we will make payments to a savings account for the going rate of a reputable warranty company and self insure.  Beware of Mercury Auto Extended Warranties it is too late if you are making a claim.

"Next time we will make payments to a savings account for the going rate of a reputable warranty company and self insure."

Sorry you had to learn the hard way.   Most of these 3rd party warranty companies are exactly the same.   They get you to pay thousands up front for supposedly bumper to bumper coverage, then they avoid paying by citing techincalities.   The "auto warranty" section of this site is full of similar complaints.

If people just took these thousands of dollars spent on 3rd party warranties and just set it aside, they'd likely come out ahead.

This is one of those things that falls under "too good to be true".  When you see these companies advertising on TV that they'll provide this amazing coverage on a 10 yr. old car with 250K miles on it, you have to know that there's no way they could really do that and stay in business.
