In September of 2011, I brought my 2007 Subaru Legacy 2.5 to Monro Muffler on William Penn Highway in Monroeville, PA 15146 for replacement tires. James M. is the representative that helped me and did the work on my vehicle. James suggested tires (Bridgestone Potenza RE050) and I asked if they were all season tires that will do well in winter weather because I travel year round. James said the tires he suggested will be fine in all weather. I trusted James and said it was ok to install the tires. Winter weather finally came to the Pittsburgh region for the first time of 2011/2012, last week (under 1" of snow) and I had a bad experience of sliding all over the road and being unable to stop properly even at slow rates of speed. I assumed the weather was just too bad for driving. Unfortunately it snowed again today in Pittsburgh (currently under 1" of snow) and I had the same experience. I began to feel something was wrong and researched the tires online. I found that the Bridgestone considers the tire a "SUMMER" type under the category of "PERFORMANCE". The manufacturer does not even rate the tire for winter driving. There are many other tires on the manufacturer site rated for winter conditions, but not the tire James suggested. I called Monro corporate customer service line (800-876-6676 x 3500) and spoke with a representative named "Chris". He collected my info and called me back to offer a "good deal" for new replacement tires. I explained that is unacceptable because the tires were represented as something they are not by James. Chris then escalated my call to Supervisor Chris J. Chris J. told me "I should have been an educated consumer", I "got a great deal on those tires and I should be happy", Monro "will not lose money on this deal" and "people drive those tires in the winter". I explained all of the information above and I should not have to pay for misrepresentation that will lead to an accident. Chris J. said he will not "give me free tires". I explained I do not want free tires, I only want what is right and I should not have to pay for someones lies to a trusting consumer. I just want safe tires for my vehicle.

Just out of curiosity I looked this tire up on Tire Rack's web site (a very good place to research tires).  Among other things in their description is this quoted statement -

It is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

They  went on to describe it as a excellent tire for dry and wet SUMMER performance tire.

You certainly were recommended the wrong tire and I'd be upset too.  You should be able to have a tire store give you a better recommendation than that. You can get dedicated winter tires (Blizzak sp?) but that's an additional big expense, I live in lower Michigan and all-season tires are adequate. Their statement that people drive on them in winter is meaningless, people drive on completely bald tires in the winter too.

The question, of course, is can you get them to admit they made the incorrect recommendation.  I expect I would have gone with their recommendation the same as you did, I have done it before (not this dealer) and it turned out OK but after reading this I'll make sure to get quoted model numbers and do some independent research before I buy.

It sucks and I'd be upset too.  Good luck.

Their is not much you can do in this situation becuase it is your word against, the sales person who sold you the tire, I doubt he is going to admit he lied and mislead you into buying those tires. I would file a complaint with the better bussness bureau so that it is on record that the store mislead you into choosing those tires. It sounds like the Monro you went to has a dishonest manager I don't have this problem with the Monro in Cincinnati Ohio. I would recomend going to a different shop to have the right tire put on your car for the climate you are in.
