I worked for this company for a couple of years. I worked freelance at first, then got hired on full time in the office. I know exactly what went on in the office because I worked in production, as ghostwriter and graphic designer. Sometimes it took a lot longer than we anticipated to get the books finished because some of the businesses wanted to use their own photos and then sent us photos that were not of publishable quality, so we had to wait for them to do it right, and many other little details that they never understood were holding up the book for everybody. The owners of the company never wanted to disappoint everybody so they tried very hard to accommodate everyone's wishes. At some point, we just had to finish the book and we always did, when I was there, although sometimes it ran past the initial deadline by quite a bit through no fault of the owners. Although I left before it happened, I have talked to former employees and I know that they did go out of business when the economy kind of collapsed around here, and I am not surprised because the people they were trying to advertise for were the ones who were probably hit hardest by the state of the economy. They believed in the business ethic of the people in their books and in their work, that's why they did this project, and I have a bookcase full of beautiful, finished, hardcover books that I helped work on. I don't know any company that is perfect, but these people worked hard and did the best that they could at that time.

I can assure anyone who is wondering about Morgan & Chase Publishing that they were excellent employers for several years and never missed a pay nor were they ever late with paycheques. The books always came out and were great value to the 'Treasures' who participated. I was a writer and took photos and wrote rough drafts for the Publisher on contract basis. They also had a dozen 'ghost writers' -hired I believe over the web- who polished the stories and they had a photo dept. as well as layout editors and a finance dept. and customer service and were a full complete company for years until the recession of 08 finally took them down, I presume. I can't know because I finished my contract late '07 and had little contact since except by an occasional email. Treasures participants got good value for their $399 and employees and writer all got paid to my knowledge and from my personal experience. The deal was : "You can participate in the book for no net cost. You were hand selected by qualifying as a truly interesting business with an interesting history and preferably a family-run business with a good story to pass on. You are required to show some interest in the project by agreeing to pre-buy only 10 books at $39.00 each which helps with the cost of artwork and writing but once the book comes out the costs will be cover by book sales to stores etc. The treasure may return any or all unsold books for full refund after the 1 yr. launch period and so they got great publicity all over North America for zero net cost." A wonderful deal and the books ALL got beautifully created and published and distributed until the crash in late 07. Buy one from any existing Treasure and see for yourself. I know, I took many or the photos myself and really enjoyed meeting and writing about the interesting retailers, museums, resorts and spas we included in Ontario' s 3 books -all published! I'm sympathetic to those caught up in the last edition which will probably never get to press but every business has it's risk Even GM and large brokerages and banks are going under. Blame Bush or greedy banker or whoever but not M&C... their intentions were pure.
