This company is quite scam artist.  From the two reports I just read it looks like they scam customers which is appauling in its own right.  However, you might be more surprised to know the scam they put on people to get them to come and work for free.  My Sports Dreams for is a fundraising company that advertised as something completely different from that.  They posted ads on craigslist for those seeking employment and the title of the posting said "Sports Writers Needed."  Given that I am a journalism major and want to write this naturally peaked my interest.  Once I openned the job listing inside it said "its not sports writing but its close."  Well let me be the first to tell you there is nothing "close" about it.

I went there for an interview on the train, I took a cab to the office and met the owner of the company who tried to explain how it was a "sports writing" job.   He explained that I would be responsible to for talking to people, gathering research and talking to college athletes for their club sports about there team. Those were his exact words.   I was excited for this seeing as though they had done a thorough job at explaining to me how things worked (at least I thought).  I than returned two days later for a training session with about 5 other people who were there (I thought for the same reason).

This is where the bait and switch began.  It turns out this was infact a fundraising company and my "job" where they were not going to pay me for (no salary, just commission) was going to be email, cold call, facebook as many college students who were in club sports or clubs in general to get them to use their service.  Once they agreed to use our service than and only than would we make any money out of it and we were to make 10% of what the team paid.  They required you to make $7500 in 2 months or they were not going to continue to allow you to work for free.  The second ranking member of this company Jordan Kerr, my immediate supervisor, explained to everyone how it worked but conveniently forgot to include the part about not paying for anything like getting to work benefits or anything like that.  While I worked there I continued I was encouraged by Jordan with my calling and my attempts to raise money.  He also offered all of us his assistance in finding another job elsewhere if this just simply happened not to work out.   Well none of those things happened.   Not a single team wanted to talk to me, stating that the company I was working for were a bunch of scamming thieves.

This company takes advantage of the unemployment market in this country by convincing kids who don't know any better that this would be a great "sports writing" job they can "make lots of money" and than scams them.  I have no idea how this company gets away with breaking just about every labor law in the country.  Mostly because the people they employ more often than not don't have the means to be able to bring a suit against them or launch any kind of investigation.  I am pretty sure however, that the better business bureau and the Dept. of labor would love to know what this company is up too.  For those of you who are concerned about getting ripped off by My Sports Dreams I'll say this: if this is how they treat people who work for them just imagine how they'll treat you if you decide to go into business with them.

What a real PIECE OF TRASH!

Good job leaving that place and putting the word out!

And I thought the reports on American Income were bad!

WORSE THAN the "office position" I responded to way back where they wanted us to sell toys door to door!

Dear Matt Newman from Riverdale, NY:

I understand you are bitter because you have been out of work for over a year now and that no one has hired you, but it is not fair to take that out on me.

Is it really my fault that no one wants to hire you?  Is it my fault that you did not make even one sale during your internship or prove to me that you deserved a spot on our team?

You accepted the unpaid internship knowing EXACTLY what was involved.  I specifically remember spending over one hour with you answering all of your concerns.  I made sure to be crystal clear with what I expected from you.  You even agreed to cover your own transportation expenses.  That was your choice.  No one forced you to work here.

I gave you an opportunity to receive a full-time job, but you were obviously not up to the challenge.  Your intern colleagues, Mike G. and Pete C. were and they received job offers and have been working with us full time for the last year.

Here are my notes from my evaluation during the short time you were here:

--Brought in zero revenue in over a monthinability to relate to clients.  Weak on the phone.  Put a few orders in the system.  When we followed up with them, it appears they were made up or Matt was not clear to client explaining what we do.every team canceled.

--Poor work ethic.  Missed several days without notice.  Rarely works a full day.

--Does not get along with superiors or colleagues.  Rough personality.

--Terrible work attitude.  Feels hes entitled and that we should hire him simply because he has graduated collegehas done absolutely nothing to prove that he deserves to be a part of our teamun-coachable, thinks hes a know-it-all.

--Writing is filled with grammatical errors (Matt, case in point:  read what you just posted about usway too many errors for a Journalism majorespecially use of then vs. than and spelling of names.)

If any of Matt Newmans prospective employers would like to hear more about my experience with him, or anyone reading this has any questions about the way we treat our interns or employees, please contact me anytime at 914-241-0204 x300 or [email protected].

P.S.  Matt, if your dream job is to be a journalist, I strongly encourage you to be very careful before committing libel again.  My company takes this very seriously and I really hope that this is the last time I hear from you.
