Well, my story begins in 1998. We bought a Double Wide from Oakwood and had it placed in a park. The home really was not what we wanted, but they of course convinced us it was a great deal. I believe they called it the Dream Home. It was a three bedroom home and of course once we were in it, it was really too small. There were 5 of us and I am the only woman!! It was freezing in the winter and the walls were so thin, the celing was starting to open.
I knew with three growing boys that this was not going to work so we began trying to sell after about a year because like I see on some of these reports, they reassured us we could trade it in and there would be no problem. Our first mistake was signing up with the ballon payment. Of course that goes up every couple of years and if you are in a park, the pad rent goes up every year! Our payments were cheap in the begining, but towards the end the payments would have been around $900.00 on depreciating property, we did not worry too much with that issue because they said re-financing it wold be no problem at all!!!!
Boy if I knew then what I know now!!! So we started trying to work with Oakwood..oh they promised us the sun and the moon and made it look like they were really trying to help us re-sell the home and they acted so sincere, but of course they avoided every call we made till we finally went out there face to face.
There was this one guy, I can not remember his name, I am sure if I pull out my notes I could find it, but this guy got fired later on, he and I talked many times and he said Oakwood was very underhanded and that he would be surprised if I was able to sell the home with their help. We played this game from maybe sept 1999 until the day we walked out an left it on March 31, 2000. What I always thought was strange is the sales people were always moving around to other locations...they were supposedly always promoted...I don't think so do you?? We never heard a word from Oakwood until maybe july, threatening us and law suits.
My husband and I prayed and within one week my old neighbor called and informed me that the home sold!!! Little did they know, my husbands parents live in the park, so we were able to know what goes on! Of course Oakwood never called to tell us they sold it or what the differnce was that we owed. I actually talked to the person who bought my home!!! Our phone wires were still connected!
When we were moving, we had the phone company turn my phone on at both places. This woman informed me that they bought the home for I think she said 52000.00 It was was maybe 1000.00 short of what we owed! Of course Oakwood never told us they sold it and we have never heard another word from them. Ahhh but we know it is not that easy don't we???? they have my credit so screwed up it is not even funny! They are on my credit report showing up a real Estate not personal property and they are on there twice from 2000 to 2003 as Oakwood and again under Vanderbuilt Financing as of last year!!! I don't even know who that is.
So creditors think we foreclosed on a home...not personal property and again this all happend in march of 2000!!!! It is now 2005!!! So now this is how I stumbled upon your website as I am trying to find them because Oakwood can no longer be found here where I live and I need to figure out how to get this junk off my credit.
Somehow I think who ever took over my loan their stuff is getting reported on my credit. The home did not stay there in the park long. I don't know if it got repo'd again or if the people moved it. I know the mobile home park said they were not going to accept anymore oakwood homes because they said they have nothing but problems with them. Anyway that is my story. My nightmare! We left the place in excellant condition. If anyone has any advice or websites please let me know. Thank you!
