Sounds like Demodex... and you are correct, it can be a life long condition (sometimes they can outgrow it), though it is not a virus. Mites are parasites. Most dogs that get Demodectic mange are puppies/young dogs who have compromised immune systems - that would be any pet store puppy (who most likely came from a puppy mill and was in poor health to begin with). Many dogs have these mites and their immune systems can hold the mites in check, but when you are starting off with a puppy that was probably in poor health to begin with. Demodex can also be hereditary - a sick female puppy mill dog being bred and passing off diseases to her offspring. This is just one more reason that you should not buy a puppy from a pet store. You are almost certain to get a sick puppy (genetic, viral, bacterial - you name it). Unfortunately, I don't think you are going to get anything from the pet store on this one. Next time, buy a dog from a reputable breeder who does breed appropriate health screening or adopt from a rescue.
