I bought what I thought was a $9.95 introductory language course. Hidden (grayed out) on long page of graphics and text is a small line authorizing more (and bigger) charges.

This is clearly misleading.

They send their packages without their name to get people to open them without knowing where they come from. Once opened, of course, they can't return.

This is a rotten, rotten, business.

"read the fine print"
That's a joke. Pimsleur is using deceptive and misleading advertising.
Legitimate businesses put the amount you're going to pay next to the buy button. NOT PIMSLEUR! THIS IS A SCAM.
Legitimate businesses don't put a cryptic, grayed out, small font "fine print" connection to hidden and mysterious charges. THIS IS A SCAM.
Legitimate businesses don't load up the "buy" page with graphics and text to hide the grayed out, small font "fine print". THIS IS A SCAM.
Pimsleur is taking advantage of the fact that there are thousands of legitimate online business that people can trust because their TOTAL CHARGES ARE ON THE SAME PAGE AS THE "BUY BUTTON". THIS IS A SCAM.

Return policy a joke!

The problem lies in the fact that once you realize what you've signed up for, trying to return the packages and get Pimsleur to STOP deducting your account is impossible!  Not to mention shipping the items back at your own expense.  Pimsleur promises an easy return policy and does nothing of the sort.

I have had two friends (each trying to learn a different language and unaware of the other's experience with Pimsleur), go through the EXACT same thing.  They finally just had to close their checking accounts.

I wish I could have helped the second friend avoid it-- I knew about the first friend's experience but did not know the second friend had purchased a Pimsleur product until AFTER she closed her account and later made mention of it.

Rather than make demeaning statements towards those who have gone through this, I would like to make two positive suggestions:  One, read every single bit of print on a webpage before you purchase anything, and two, stop using debit cards for purchases.  It's all to easy for someone (like Pimsleur) to wipe out your account before you know what's happening.  Never give anyone online authority to deduct money out of your checking account.

Okay I sincerely beleive some folks should NOT learn any language except that of Common sense.
You learned well on one thing, read the fine print. And while you are reading it thoroughly, how about reading where it talks about "returns" with full refund ( less shipping). I get so tired of folks slamming a business without doing the "READING" of terms. So go back, read your agreements and find out for yourself how you "CAN" get proper credit. Do not "PRESUME" I work for them. This is about a complaint not about who or where I work.
