Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
We opened a policy in April with Progressive and they added without our knowledge "uninsured" motorist. At this time we demanded this be removed from our policy. They never did after we repeatedly called and asked them to do so. Although they said we could have this item removed from our policy and that they would fax over the document that we needed to sign in order to accomplish this, they never sent it. We repeatedly called and asked for this document and they kept telling us each time they would fax it and they never did. We then switched policies to All State and then received a final bill from Progressive for $503.11 which included this bogus uninsured motorists rider which we refused. We demanded this be changed and instead of changing this to the correct amount they forward the bill to a collection agency!!!!! I talked to the Collection Agency who says they are not allowed to settle and I finally called Progressive again and they said it is too late to change anything because they already sent us a final bill!!! Can you imagine if they are allowed to get away with this kind of stuff just 10% of the time how much extra money they can make from people who do not scrutinize their bill???

UIM/UM in Florida:

To clarify: According to Florida law, an insurance company cannot write an auto policy without UM/UIM unless they have a waiver signed by the customer declining UM/UIM coverage.

Don't disagree Uninsured/Underinsured is a requirement

Robert, I don't disagree with you on that point. I do disagree with it being added without the customers consent or approval. That being said, I think there might be more to this story, because who would get in such a huff over something so minor? Maybe there's another reason for wanting to change carriers and this is what we're hearing about? Uninsured/Underinsured is a requirement to carry here in SC, and the laws have just been tightened to prevent someone from driving a vehicle without insurance.

My Concorde was rammed from behind at a stop light by an "uninsured"(illegal) motrist near my house in NC. I paid the $100 deductable and the car was back to perfect. If I had used my collision coverage, I would have had a $500 deductable and it would have gone against my policy for future increases in premiums. If you don't think that is worth the coverage, good luck. Anyone whining about the $10-$20/year rate needs to stop driving a car anyway. They are the ones who go to Walmart for oil changes and then complain about the engine blowing up.

Uninsured motorist coverage is not required in Florida.

However.. Currently, I do carry uninsured and underinsured coverages... The cost per 6 months for uninsured motorist is $5.82, while underinsured is $11.65. So, about $20 per 6 months on a policy that is $350 per 6 months. Yeah.. it's $20, but seems like very little to get upset about.

Read the laws in your state

Before you start accusing Progressive of trying to pull a fast one on you, realize that in many states, certain limits of coverage are required without a signed coverage selection form. For example - you may have requested and been quoted uninsured motorists coverage at the state minimum limit, but the state requires that you have higher limits without a signed coverage selection form on file with the company, showing that you requested the lower limits. As a pretty general rule, companies do NOT arbitrarily add coverages to your policy. Although you are looking at it from the standpoint of them collecting additional premiums, also realize that the same company would be on the hook to pay out these higher amounts in the event of a claim.
