On April 20,2001 I went to St. Joseph's Hospital for a routine Mammogram. This visit was broken down into two parts; Diagnostic Mammogram $70.00 and Hospital Incidentals $77.25. The total bill was $140.25. My insurance company paid $117.80 of this bill. On April 27, 2001 they called me back for a retake (first time ever) of one of my breast (they found nothing). This bill was also broken down into two parts. $95.00 for the Diagnostic Mammogram and $66.75 for Hospital Incidentals.

My insurance company only paid $76.00 on this second bill. Totally that one routine mammogram has cost me and my insurance company $309.00. I have had a mammogram every year since the case study started in the 70's and I have never paid more than $85.00 for the examination.

I can not imagine what the "Hospital Incidentals" could consist of. The cold coffee that was not drinkable, the locker that did not lock or the gown that was large enough for three people. This cost was exorbitant and should not be allowed. I think it is a clear cut case of steeling from Peter to give to Paul and I resent it.

I am 63 years old and, for the most part, live on social security. Since I am not old enough for Medicare, I have to pay a lot for medical insurance. It is the outrageous hospital cost like this that makes insurance premimums so high. In 2000, I had a routine mamogram done in St. Joseph's Mobil Unit for $65.00. Can you tell me how the Hospital can justify such outrageous charges?

Barbara Did you ask them what these incidental charges where? Get a DETAILED listing of what goes into incidental charges! If part of incidental charges where for medication, did you receive the medication? Challenge them on each charge. If not justified tell them that you will not pay for them. You must do this in writting. Hope this helps.
