On 1/26/18 I pulled into this Shell station known as the Corner Market @ 6874 Weaver Rd, Rockford, ILL. & purchased $16.91 for gas & $8.75 for a car wash for a total of $25.66. They had the nerve to charge my account $75.00 in which it overdrafted the account. I had to immediately pull over & tranfer funds over to that account to avoid overdraft charges. It's been 3 days now & I still have not recieved a refund. Companies like this need to be shut down, this is flat out THEFT.

Holds

What you are seeing is a $75 HOLD on your account that is placed on your card when you used the "Pay at the Pump".  If you really thought it was a fraudlent charge you should be calling your bank.  But don't be surpised when you do if they say that they can't do anything until this "Pending" charge posts.  Because here is what really is going on.

Whenever you use the "Pay at the Pump" the station ALWAYS authorizes a certain amount since they have no idea how much you are actually going to get.  This varies by station to anywhere from about $50-$125.  Had you actually pumped $75 worth of gas, the pump would have shut-off.  When you finish pumping the station will then release the hold and submit the final(actual) amount.  Yes, regardless of what you say this is what happens EVERY time you "Pay at the Pump".

In normal circumstances the hold is released and real amount chaged when you finish so you never really see the hold amount. Although, if your bank is quick enough and you logged in while you were pumping you may actually see the hold in process.  However, in some cases due to things outside of the stations and banks control it could take a few days to have this happen. Where in the mean time you will see the larger hold.  Unfortunatly it will take away your "available" balance and again depending on the bank may Overdraft your account.  You may want to check with  your bank if you would have caused on Overdraft in this situation(not all banks would).  As an alternative you can use a Credit Card as those do not have the same hold processes as a Debit Card.

If you want to avoid this in the future then you must go inside and ask for a specific amount to purchase, if you just say "fill 'er up" they will put the same hold on it.
