I received a letter stating that Alegis Group, LP was giving me an opportunity to address a debt by way of a visa credit card account that I could open to pay off the debt. They would forgive $115.22, leaving an even $1000 ballance to pay off at 19.9% interest. They claimed I owed $1115.22 to Southwestern Bell.
I have never had dealings with Southwestern bell, as they ceased to exist at about the time I turned 18 and could actually get credit and cellular phones. In addition, I worked for Radioshack at the time and prefered the Sprint and Cellular One products, and got nice employee discounts with their services. I would have never signed with Southwestern Bell at that time of my life and could not have signed up with them later as they ceased to exist!
Now, I read the report of this exact same company, Sherman Acquisition II LP doing this same kind of thing fraudulently in South Carolina. The letter I got was out of South Dakota, but read the same as the other one reported.
I immediately re-checked my online credit reports. Sure enough, no ballance of that ammount appears. I then called the company to let them know I was on to them.
They said that the balance is from an account that was closed prior to 2000. They also advised me that though the ballance could no longer be legally reported on my credit report, they could still attempt to collect on it for 6 years from that date. The specific date was not provided to me.
Then I came to the realization: why should I bother? If the whole thing will blow over a year from now, and it is not impacting my credit rating, why would I want to do the absurdly reckless thing of getting a $1000 debt on a visa at 19.9% interest? My credit is pretty bad and I don't think that would help me.
Anyhow, I will still report them to the BBB of South Dakota, and might go ahead send letters to everyone else that the other victim on this site sent letters to. We will see, and I will update if I do anything else.

They promise you a "credit card", which does nothing for you other than get you to "reaffirm" a debt that is either beyond the statute of limitations or does not exist at all. Obviously, if it is too old to be reported, it is WAY beyond the statute of limitations. Good for you for being too smart to fall for that scam!
