On April 4th, 2001, Michael Segelstein had an incident that haunts him to this day.
He did not rape, or beat the woman who alleges in her post that those events occurred, but after an emotional evening watching holocaust survivors, Segelstein escorted Theressa R**** to her car. After she began crying from the emotions of the evening, Segelstein attempted to comfort R**** and proceeded to kiss her against her will.
One kiss. Not rape. Not brutal. Yes, unwanted. There was no medical attention needed, and no medical report filed, but a police report filed led to Segelstein pleading guilty to a gross misdemeanor and registering as a sex offender.
I repeat, a kiss, not "raped by a convicted sex offender," as the woman alleges. Michael Segelstein had never been arrested before this.
She also states that she is a victim of hate crimes perpetrated by September 11th due to her Muslim husband. This incident happened months before Americans learned to hate and fear Muslims, however unfair that assessment might be.
This is not the only man that she has accused of this heinous crime. No woman should be made to suffer this injustice, but no man should have to pay for a crime he did not commit, especially one that by a false accusation could invalidate women who do suffer rape. What credibility is given to a woman who would falsely accuse people of a crime that is horrible and prevalent, wronging not only these men, but also her fellow females, her sisters in the fight to gain equality.
Michael Segelstein has admitted that he has done wrong. He admitted that he made a grave mistake. He has paid every day for that mistake. His family pays for that mistake every day. It follows him and haunts him, and is a constant guiding point for his moral compass, one he does not stray from. He spends every day atoning for that mistake, volunteering and giving of himself to pay for one stupid moment of weakness. He knows that he hurt this woman, he hurt himself, and he hurt his family. But to exaggerate and lie, instead of making peace and coming to terms with those mistakes, as this woman has so clearly done, is the most heinous crime of all in this situation. She is hurting herself, other people she has accused, him, his entirely innocent wife, his children that should never have to bear the burden of one mistake. Of one stupid kiss.
