The Editors comments are valid. I have been researching the companies that provide many products to the sub prime consumer set, especially offering credit. This one is actually one of the good guys. The net of thier program is to offer a 30 day free trial of thier online shopping mall and after 30 days to bill your account $9.95 per month that you are a member. They send an email at the time that you subscribe to the program and once you have paid your $9.95, they send you a package of information that includes a plastic card with your account number. The card allows you to access 70+ thousand items online, out of a possible million or more, and they guarantee for 30 days that this is the lowest price when you buy it. Simply call to cancel or get your money back and they will refund all but the money paid for merchandise shipped. They are FTC clean and have had internal and external legal review of thier marketing and business practices to ensure that they are FTC friendly.
Having said all of that, almost all of their memberships come from people on the internet that have opted into the offer when on a Payday Loan application. They apparently have also tried other forms of marketing that have not been successful, but I cannot comment on those. In the case of the Payday Loan form, the terms are explicit, the $9.95 is spelled out, as is the free trial for 30 days. They also state that they will bill the account that the consumer has provided with thier loan application. The application data is then scrubbed to prevent fraud, and an email is immediately sent to the consumer with relevant information on the program and the contact information for the call center.
Net: you can get all of your money back
Net: to get the account you would have been providing your name, address, phone, social security number, bank account information and likely your date of birth (for idently verification and also state age compliance). I find it difficult to believe that a consumer can provide all of that personal information, then verify on the form that they want to apply, and not know that they have applied for something.
