I contacted Swapalease in August of 2008 because I was contemplating exiting the lease of my two year old Honda Civic. Jeff Keck was the sales rep I spoke with. Because Honda Finance does not allow Lease Transfers I was advised by Jeff that my alternative would be the Swapalease New Lease program. The New Lease Program involves Swapalease purchasing my lease outright and releasing it to someone new. This is only done after finding a lessee through the Swapalease network. I provided the details of my lease to Jeff. This includes the current buyout cost, mileage of the car, options on the car, etc. Jeff said my car would initially be listed as a new lease with the terms of $380 per months for 36 months. I asked Jeff what would happen as I made payments on my current lease since that would reduce the current buyout. Jeff said that after I make two payments to contact him and he would readjust the numbers. He assured me that the listed monthly payment would go down. I agreed to pay the $500 to enroll in the service.

After several weeks and no interest in my vehicle I contacted Jeff. I had since made a payment and I wanted Jeff to readjust the terms. Jeff informed me of a new the system they were implementing in which the user would update their data each month (current buyout, mileage, etc) and the terms would automatically be adjusted. He informed he was activating my account in the system. I updated the figures as I was instructed. After a few days the New Lease terms for my listing adjusted unfavorably. The monthly payment increased almost $50. I immediately contacted Jeff Keck. He assured me it was just bugs with the new system. He told me to wait a few days and the system should be corrected. Again he assured me the monthly payment should drop. After a week and nothing had changed I contacted Jeff again. Again he said to give it a few more days. After a few days, still nothing had changed. I contacted Jeff once again and he told me there was nothing he could do. He said, The numbers are what they are. I was irate. I asked Jeff for the contact info for his manager. He gave me the number for Andrew Hall. I emailed and left a voicemail for Andrew Hall. Andrew Hall never responded to my messages. My monthly payment did decrease slightly from $428 to $418 dollars. This is still almost $40 dollars more than when I initially listed the car.

Over the next two months I continued to adjust my buyout amount and mileage on the vehicle after I made each new lease payment. The Monthly Payment for my listing remained at $418, almost $40 more than the initial listing.

In early December 2008 I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in hopes I could persuade Swapalease to refund my money. Scott Hall, EVP of Operations at Swapalease, responded to the BBB complaints I filed. He refused my request citing their no refund policy as well disclaimers of terms for New Leases are subject to change due to market conditions. I find it absurd that Swapalease is contending in a repressed economy in which car prices have been slashed across the board and interest rates have plummeted that my car could possibly be rising in value. This car is two and half years old, has a buyout price of $1500 lower than when I first listed it with Swapalease, and has almost 2000 more miles. There is no possible way the market conditions justify the increase in monthly payment for the terms listed with my vehicle. Keep in mind this all occurred after the implementation of an admittedly flawed system. So basically for $500 Swapalease provides poor services and implement admittedly flawed systems that will negatively affect vehicle listings. I urge you stay away from Swapalease. They will rip you off.

Swapalease.com has an A+ Cincinnati BBB rating!

#2Consumer Comment

Swapalease.com (SAL) pays Cincinnati BBB (BBB) for services. BBB sayes their ratings are not based on receiving payment but is the outcome of a multifactor system they employ to generate ratings. Key BBB employes are: Leslie Kish, Chris Haylay; Vicki Torok.

My experience with SAL is they cannot be trusted to leep their promises; such as: (1) There is one charge ($300) for top advertising until your vehicle sells/transfers. (2) We will screen all prospective buyers and only present qualifed buyers to you. (3) You will receive only the top level advertising (Platinum) until your car sells/transfers. All lies. You connot trust Swapalease!

My experience with the BBB started with trust but that quickly eroded. They administratively closed my case after SAL offed to return my $300. Made no difference to the BBB what was promised. Don't trust the BBB!

Anybody Can BUY a Phoney BBB "Rating"!

#3Consumer Comment

PLEASE.....DO NOT put ANY stock in the BBB or their PHONEY "ratings". A business gets a "rating" by PURCHASING it! Check out bbbroundup.com or enter bbbscam into the youtube search. Slimeball businesses will cite their phoney rating while continuing to scam customers. They then hide behind the BBB when they get caught in their scam. Remember, no matter what you've heard, the BBB has nothing to do with any government body. Anybody can buy a phoney rating and many in the Sleazy American Car Business do. The BBB is an acknowledged scam and the BBB carries absolutely NO CREDIBILITY in the legitimate business community!

It is hard to concieve Swapalease.com with an A+ BBB rating when so many complaints have been filed and many have not reached resolution. What is going on with the BBB?

Let's Talk the Facts, Shall We?

#6Consumer Suggestion

Marcus: There are several matters here we need to shed a great, big spotlight on. At the outset, NEVER, EVER get involved in a CAR FLEASE. There are numerous reasons why but simply remember, in a CAR FLEASE, somebody gets sheared...that somebody is YOU! Its a very bad deal which NO family financial advisor haS EVER recommended. Lets take a look at a few other points in this aspect of the Sleazy American Car Business. If you were to sell a house, you would pay the agent AFTER they did their work and NOT BEFORE. If this place has so-o-o-o many people interested in your FLEASE, then they could wait until after the deal is done. What would be the problem? After all, they have so-o-o-o many interested customers beating down the doors? Marcus, do you get paid IN-ADVANCE where you work??? Notice long and hard how this individual responded to you. Did he/she attempt to explain their side of the story or did they use the old BBB SNOW JOB tactic? Lets take a look at the BBB. The BBB has an enormous self publicity campaign designed to SNOW the public into thinking they are some type of government agency and are so concerned about you the consumer. They will tell you they are not a government agency but continue to call themselves "the bureau" just like the FBI does. Why not call themselves the "Better Business Association"? The BBB provides you with alot of excess and often times useless information so that you are "SNOWED" into thinking they really are consumer oriented, which as you will see, is far from it! This "accredidation" spoken of is absolutely WORTHLESS. The BBB "accredidation" is a bought and sold commodity in the same way a slimeball politician sells jobs or some off shore operation sells fake diplomas. Any business can buy one. Isn't it interesting how BBB gets CAUGHT in their own con-game? They tell you such and such business is an "accredited" member but out of the other side of their mouth they will tell you "as a matter of policy, the 'Bureau' does not ENDORSE any business". If the BBB says the business is so-o-o honest, full of integrity, never in trouble etc, etc, etc, why won't they endorse it? Why? Because BBB knows FULL WELL this "accreditation" stuff is nothing but pure industrial strength B. S.! Maybe you remember Bill Heard Chevrolet. Bogus Billy was in trouble with every state attorney general in every state in which his schlock operation was located. He was also a BBB MEMBER!!! Only after the State of Georgia sued Bogus Billy for repeated and continued fraud and deception, did the BBB decide to ncancel his "membership". By the way, Bogus Billy went out of business NOT because of the economy but because of the $50 Million Georgia lawsuit and because GMAC pulled the plug due to his financial irregularities, largely in connection with their floor plan agreement. The BBB is a favorite tool of the slimeballs in the Sleazy American Car Business. I can tell you right now the dealers who have "accredidation" who have a history of phoney add-on fees, spot delivery scam, running phoney going out of business sales etc, etc, etc. I would be very, very suspicious of any business which hides behind the BBB and their PURCHASED ACCREDIDATION rather than address the clear cut issues of fraud/deception. The BBB is not responsive to you complaint because this business is a customer. They paid for this phoney accredidation and the BBB wants their BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP to continue. Why not take this up with the news media? As for my terminology here as the "Sleazy American Car Business"...everybody knows the reputation of far too many people involved in this field of retail. In our case, we were involved as a supplier to many in that profession and it was standard operating procedure they would pay cash, no checks, no credit. There are some people in the business who are the exception however. When you find them, do business with them for life!!!

Swapalease still ripping me off

#8Author of original report

Tue, January 06, 2009

The BBB administratively closed my complaint. That is what the BBB does when a company stonewalls on a BBB compliant. Swapalease continues to refuse to fix their wrongs in this case. Swapalease still refuses to answer how the terms for my listing can have a higher monthly payment now than when I first listed the car 5 months ago.
