Drivers near ASU and the light rail station beware. There is a predator towing company S.W.A.T Towing lurching in the shadows waiting for you to park in the abandoned parking lot near rural and University.

I parked in the abandoned lot to hitch a free ride on the new light rail on New Years Eve. My first clue should have been, nobody was parked in the parking lot. But because all five of the businesses that had once occupied the complex were vacant, I ignored the Patron Parking Only signs and hopped out of my car to test the new light rail.

When I returned from my joy ride I discovered my car was gone. I called S.W.A.T Towing which was listed on the Patron Parking Only signs and sure enough they had towed my car out of the abandoned parking lot of the abandoned complex. After a three mile hike to 1920 Rio Salado Parkway, I was greeted by a tooth missing thug who threatened my husband because he touched their fence and then refused to give me my car because I didn't have one hundred and twenty bucks in cash on me. My son had to bring me the cash so I could get my car out of hawk.

Sure I ignored the Patron Parking Only signs but there were no businesses to patronize therefore I didn't see any reason anybody couldn't park in the lot. If the property owner didn't want people parking in their abandoned lot then they should rope it off or something.

What a gig for S.W.A.T thug towing company. I have no recourse. They can drive around just picking peoples cars up and holding them hostage by their thug drop house bouncer guy with the missing teeth.

The city of Tempe is just as guilty of being in the predator thug towing business as they give license to these guys to go around unnecessarily towing cars and holding them hostage and treating people like gangsters. I think I would be safer in South Phoenix.

How to NOT pay SWAT towing

SWAT Towing, DBA Auto Citi Towing: Tom O'Brien, Troy Myers, Pete Colantoni, proprieters. This is a notorious towing company who pay commercial land owners to sign contracts to tow from their properties. There are many parking lots all over the valley patrolled by their meth addicted drivers, looking to find a sucker who inadvertently parked in a lot by assuming no one would mind. The truth is that it is rare that someone does mind; it is an opportunity to unethically make money. This company had lots of problems when they started in Tempe because they were not meeting their legal responsibilities. (read: breaking the law.) They responded by joining the Tempe Chamber of Commerce and greasing palms. (Who got new cars?) Soon enough, they singlehandedly had the City change the very laws they were breaking in their favor: (Tempe City Code 32.) If they tow YOU and a police department did not order the tow: Shockingly, thanks to that same law it is still illegal for them to extort money from you by witholding your car. They HAVE to give you your car when you come to claim it, even with no payment. You will have to get a ride to the Chandler office and then to the Tempe lot to do so, since they have your car. You WILL need to sign a letter in accordance with the law they changed. On this letter above your signature, write "My signature does not imply acceptance of liability or debt. This is not a promise to pay." Plan to NOT sign for a subpoena in the mail from them within a few months...

From your OWN words. "..My first clue should have been, nobody was parked in the parking lot..." "..I ignored the Patron Parking Only signs.." Yet it is THEIR fault that your car was towed? "..If the property owner didn't want people parking in their abandoned lot then they should rope it off or something..." - Umm...they did do something they had signs stating that it was for Patron's only. Since all the stores were closed there could be no patrons..so there could be no one parked there. You were the ONLY car in the lot so it seems like you were the only one who didn't get it.

it's called private property rights. they have contingent liabilities. if they don't want any cars on the lot, they hire a towing company. y should they bear the costs of putting up obstructions to THEIR property. how would you like it if people came and parked in your driveway because you weren't home? i would suggest if you do not like it, put a chain or gate up in our driveway.
