Thanks to both of your for your comments. To "overtheroadouttamymind": I had tried to do what you did with no success. I requested a new DM after six weeks of no support, rudeness, lack of communication, and downright hostility, and was told by the TM that they would "work on it". Well, they "worked on it" for a couple of weeks. When I got back to the terminal after six weeks on the road, I was taken into the office and chewed out by the TM for "time management" while my very angry DM--who obviously hadn't heard about my request--sat there and glared, never saying a thing about an impossible load he'd put on me a few days prior to that. My squeaks apparently weren't loud enough. I'm now happily driving for another company that seems to care about treating their employees decently. I wish Swift had been as quick to take care of drivers as they are about collecting the unpaid amount of my tuition! To Steve: I really appreciate the info. Had I known that at the time, I certainly would've pursued this. As it was, it happened very fast and I sucked it up and tried to move on with my life as quickly as possible. Now I'm on the road again and just want to have as much time as possible between now and my nightmare with Swift!

It is illegal for a company to change your established method of pay without your consent. This makes a case for harassment under USDOL guidelines. Also, many federal and state laws define how an employer may pay you. I did not ever see Comdata on the list. They may not pay you in a manner that costs you money to get your pay. AND, there is a timely payday law in most states. DO NOT drive that far to get your pay, and DO NOT pay a Comdata check cashing fee! File a wage claim immediately! They broke the law on this one! It appears that swift has violated many laws here. File complaints with both the USDOL and the State of NM DOL. Also keep in mind that Swift is a government contractor. Additional rules of conduct apply. Good luck!

A very wise person once told me "The wheel that squeaks the most gets the grease". Translation: If you don't like the way you're being treated, start complaining. Your DM isn't working for you/is too lazy/ doesn't give a sh*t? Talk to your FM about getting a new DM. That doesn't work? Talk to The TM. Ask about getting transferred to a different terminal if that doesn't work. I had a horrible experience with a certain DM and a certain swift terminal in washington. But instead of just quitting and whining to a bunch of people who can't help you I talked to the terminal manager and after a couple of weeks got transferred to the Lathrop terminal in CA. And wound up with a DM who actually likes doing his job. This is a large company your dealing with here... If you don't like part of it explore your options and find out what works for you (without pissing off too many higher-ups in the company). But if you can't work out some sort of solution before complaining, just save your time and walk away... trucking isn't for you

If you've recently quit Swift or are planning to do so, be aware that they'll even mess with you about your final paycheck. After having direct deposit for over six months, my final check didn't show up, and my ex-DM, who won the prize for being unsupportive, called me to tell me that I'd have to drive to a truck stop that did COM-DATA checks in order to collect my final pay. I thought I might get away with a 3 hr. RT drive, but it turns out that I'm looking at a 6 hr. round trip. Hmm. That's about $50. in gas, a fairly large chunk of my paycheck. The TM's wife, who had promised to return my call, never did so, but that seems to be typical. However, Swift--always attentive to detail-- wasted no time in mailing me a letter telling me how much I owed on the remainder of my tuition. If you have a dream about driving, and put your heart and soul into your work, don't sign on with this company. If you're expecting to receive what they promise, EDUCATE YOURSELF and read all of the comments on-line about other drivers' experiences with Swift. Swift does not deliver, and they'll chew you up and spit you out like a watermelon seed. It seems to be to their advantage to terminate you or to get you to quit before they start giving benefits. Don't expect support, integrity, or decency. This is a company that eats it's own young.

So, just a crappy little add-on to the Swift Experience: after quitting a week ago, I called today to verify that my final check was on its way to the bank. Someone in payroll in Phoenix told me that my last check had been PUT ON MY COMDATA CARD, which I obviously turned in when I quit!!! My check has always been directly deposited to my bank account. I live an hour and a half away from the nearest truck stop. Swift just can't stop jerking around their drivers, even after you quit. I'm entitled to every cent of the paycheck I earned--I just can't get to it, THANKS TO SWIFT. Now I have to wait and get back to these "people" and find out if there's any possibility of verifying my earnings through my COMDATA number, particularly since I've been denied access to my kiosk. I can no longer even track what they say are my trip miles, so I have no idea about how much they might be cheating me by. I can't imagine what married individuals or teams are going through because of the way Swift treats its drivers in this type of situation. We earned this money honestly and CAN'T EVEN GET TO IT! These people ruined my dream of being an OTR driver. Now I can't even get my last paycheck and be done with them.

Disgusted, there are many good companies out there but keep in mind all have their faults. Sorry to hear about your run in with the entity called Swift. I have first hand knowledge of their operation and like many could write a book about it. Of course a crony for Swift will add a rebuttal saying how rich they got leasing from Swift and that all the problems you encountered were brought on by none other than yourself. Do your homework on a company and ask them why YOU should work for them. When a company advertises on its equipment or has a monthy spot in all major newspapers, trucking mags, etc....that can tell you a whole lot about them. When a company gives a referral bonus.....hmmm, that tells me something too. Hang in there and you will find a good driving job. Good luck!
