Carol Ann, The EEOC will only enforce discimination based on race, sex, national origin, and/or disability not accomodated. Unfortunately, Veterans are not on that list. Veteran's preference only applies to government jobs and/or federal contractors. Here is a twist, find out if any of the companies under the Local 631 contracts are federal contractors. If so, the USDOL/Office of Contract Compliance has jurisdiction, and will enforce veterans employment. FYI. I was also 88M when I got injured and disabled. Also keep in mind that Teamster's Local 631 is a hiring hall that operates under a contract that the members voted in. That is the problem you will encounter. 631 is not making the rules. You are right about Nevada Labor Laws. NRS 608 was written by big business. My favorite is the clause that exempts cab drivers, limo drivers, domestic household employess, agricultural workers, and a few others from recieving at least minimum wage. Keep in mind that all cab drivers in NV are employess, there are no leased cabs or individual owner operators. Competition is illegal in NV.

Equal Employment opportunity Commission does in fact cover these types of Complaints. Go to their webpage and find out how to fight back and win! It maybe State law, but it is covered by The Federal jurisdiction. It does not matter if it is a Right to Work State or not.

Thanks Steve..you are correct. Nevada law is an abomination. I was a Teamster, in fact one of the very first females in Local 241 in Chicago. I am Mos qualified 88M, 71L, 95B. Currently an Honors student. It makes me sick that veterans who are educated are passed over if favor of the illiterate or illegal alien who have to have someone else fill out their employment applications or use Identity theft of another to aquire employment. I guess they are easier to handle. Women, on the other hand who just maybe Vets, are still expected to just sit home, have babies, be a stripper or stay on welfare. The aforemetioned are not options for me. Nevada claims to love Veterans, but it does not and proof is their employment laws! Inequality still reigns supreme in this backward state. They are very Ungrateful to any Veteran..

Carol, I am a 2 time veteran myself and am rated at 30% disabled by the VA. I also belonged to Teamsters Local 631, and am currently a Teamster here in Florida. The issues you have do not apply due to NV law. Local 631 is a "hiring hall" and the practices are defined by the contract that is written by and voted on by the members. The union is just the elected mouthpiece of the union. The MEMBERS are in control of the policies. You must be active in your union. Under that contract at Local 631 there are 3 "lists" that you have to move through, and only those on the A list will be considered full time and have steady work. Since they are not government contracts, they are not required to give Veteran's preference. The company I work for is a government contractor, and is required to follow all federal laws regarding placement and retention of Veterans. My advice: Get active in YOUR union and be present during the next contract negotiation and get Veterans preference language put in the new contract. Good luck.
