I have three types of plugs in my vehicle. The 7 pin type, the older four pin round and the flat one. The flat does not connect to the U-haul trailer. I had to buy an adaptor to connect to one of my three plugs. I chose the one that would connect to the round one, only because that was in the only one in stock. The U-haul flat plug and has a notch to prevent their plug to plug-in the widely available flat type. Also the wiring is different so if you jerry rig it, the lights will act weird or short out the circuit. If you are handy with electrical wiring you can get away with it. But who wants to spend time at the last minute jerry rigging? Someone told me that U-haul was going to convert their trailers to connect to the popular stander flat type that are widely available. I haven't seen that yet. But I know their U-haul type is to create add-on sales. It is not illegal, but it is very annoying that consumers have to buy their adaptor in order to use their trailers. I think if people complain enough, maybe they will just get with the program and switch their plugs to the fit the most popular type which I think is the flat type. I know the flat type wiring is standard. They can still make money selling the adapters for vehicles without plugs or the right type. Just my two cents.

While some new vehicles might come with a round connector, the 4 pin flat connector is pretty standard. I would personally be suprised if they did not use that. That is what both my vehicles have and what most kits at auto parts store use. I do agree that they should rent the adapter and/or include it as part of the trailer rental, but I suspect that many would not get returned. I doubt that they would allow you to return the adapter after buying it.
