Unknown Person Claude A. Burker Nigerian 419 Scam in reference to rental properties listed on Craigslist Lagos, Internet
A house for rent was advertised on Craigslist Watertown, NY. When I responded to the listing, I was told that the gentleman and his wife had won a contract in South Africa and would be away for 5 years. They needed someone to basically caretake the house. When I checked it out, I found that the person had used the ex-husband's name, that the person was in Nigeria, not South Africa, that the person did not own the home, that the person had gotten the information and pictures from a real estate listing online.
I had gone to the house. A lady living there was very upset saying that she owned the house, that she was not renting it, only selling it and that she would contact the real estate agent.
The person asked for a deposit and first months rent. When I asked where to send the payment, he gave me an address in Nigeria--not South Africa. His telephone No. was also in Nigeria.
I contacted the police. They told me that I was the third person that day to report the gentleman in question.
The alias he used is not important as he simply used the ex-husband's name. I believe he will just use whichever name is convenient for future scams.
