I started getting this extra charge on my Verizon Wireless bill for $9.99 a month per phone for Premium TXT Messaging. At 1st I thought one of the kids had used my phone to subscribe to some premium TXT messaging like:(Sports alerts: MLB, NFL etc.. Weather alerts, jokes, stock quotes, Horoscopes, etc..Trivia.Mobile coupons. Interactive Radio requesting a song to be played. Interactive TV shows and voting such as Deal or no Deal and Rockstar.) So after I read them the riot act and didn't let them use my phone. The next moth the same thing $9.99 on each phone.

I called Verizon and asked what's the deal? They stated that Premium SMS Messaging sends out text jokes or comment for the day and then charges you for it. I stated that I never subscribed for this and Verizon had no comment. I told them I wasn't going to pay! That didn't work. Verizon told me I would have to text #63232 and text "unsubscribe". Verizon had no answers as to how they got my number. They have gotten my for $120 so far. What a great way to get money text someone and then charge their carrier which then charges you. SCAM! Sound like a class action case?

#2Consumer Suggestion

As you stated, premium text messages are from third party companies. They use incredibly sneaky tactics to get you to subscribe to their services - ads are all over magazines, TV, and the internet with the charges in very small print. While it is sneaky, they are required to use a double opt-in process for signups (meaning that you need to ask for it, they need to ask you to confirm, and you have to confirm). They're also usually recurring subscriptions, so unless you unsubscribe you will continue to be billed. If your kids have been playing with your phone, it's very possible that they have subscribed you to that service. The good news is you only have to unsubscribe once to stop the charges.
