I had the unfortunate pleasure of working for WDM Group/White Digital Media in Toronto before they closed that office.  I was only there for 4 or 5 months and wanted to share my opinions.  Firstly, without going into too much about their aggressive management tactics and KPI's, I wanted to express my opinions on the overall company culture.  It can be summed up in one word....Lazy.

The reason the Toronto office closed came down to Laziness.  And it started right from the Management.

WDM Group is lazy in their hiring process.  Their hiring or office manager just want to get bodies in the door. There is no pro-active sourcing happening, they just post a job and wait.

They filter through resumes, never really reading a single line. They find candidates who meet the bare minimum requirements and take their time putting them through the process. They do not set expectations or share details about company culture. They do nothing to ensure personality fit. I bet you can guess what the consequences of this type of hiring strategy is.

A revolving door.

Lazy hiring leads to poor hires which leads to turnover. And so the cycle begins again.  WDM Groups Toronto office closed because of this.

After they hire 5 or 6 new employees who are usually young naive right out of collage type of employees the laziness doesn’t stop because it rolls right into lazy training and management.   The training is done very fast, lasts maybe 3 days where the new recruit is given an old outdated script and spoon fed exactly what to say.  They didn’t take the time to address the logical questions that arise during their process.  The trainers simply provide simple solutions.   Rather than digging into a problem or addressing an issue, they want to get through it as quickly as possible. They do not often build relationships with their staff and do not see the value in anything that takes time.  The overall company culture doesn’t take time to see value in building relationships, that’s how they run their model.

Lazy leaders look short-term. And that sums up WDM Group way of doing business.....short-term.   Thinking too far ahead is not in their game plan.  Often lazy leaders that were not ready to be leaders in the first place and therefore need to either take a step down or out in order for the business to move forward.  In the case of the Toronto office, it shut down.
