Are you seriously complaining about someone putting the toppings on it for you versus you doing it yourself? You are building your own burger; it's just not your hands putting it together.
So, let's say you went to Toyota's website; where you can "build" your next car. I suppose you'd want to go to the Toyota plant and physically piece the car together yourself?
Get a life.

Hello,
I too have seen these ads, and in more than one of the "made to order" tv spots, it actually shows the order process (describing the style of burger to be made an order taker). Maybe you're listening to the ads on the radio or something?
In one ad, a man is standing behind another in line. Hearing the man in front of him verbally order a unique sounding burger, the man behind gives a knowing nod. There is no condiment bar in sight.
Sure, the number of combinations is a little high because it distinguishes between "one patty, one cheese slice, jalepenos" and "one patty, two cheese slices, jalepenos" and counts these as ostensibly completely different burgers, but I wouldn't claim this to be outrageous or egregious...
Anyways, my point is that this is not a sham, bait-and-switch, or even an exaggeration... Their tv advertisements represent the dining experience very well. Indeed, perhaps your report is exaggerating a bit?
As well, when you described what you had in mind - "a huge list of options [with which you can] customize a burger all of your own," I thought to myself: Alvin is going to love Fuddrucker's. Check it out! They even have buffalo burgers if you like.
One more thing: Whataburger is expensive. One thing that they don't tell you in those tv spots is that a custom burger will quickly add up: add a patty, bacon, and jalepenos? Well that just doubled the price. Add two slices of cheese and some BBQ sauce to that? Now we're getting into the ten-plus dollar range for a combo meal...
Thanks,
Tarn

Why don't you stop complaining about your 4 dollar burger that's twice the size of any other joint's burger and overly large drink and fry's.
If you want to build your own burger goto a Fuddruckers (yes, another one of those crazy kick a*s texas burger chains) where they do let you build your own burger... for the price...
and please, stay out of Texas

They claim that they have over 32,000 combinations of a What-A-Burger. No where does it say you get to hand build your own burger. It's not like McDonald's or Burger King where the biggest variation you get is "hold the ketchup." You can, cause I've tried, ask for a double meat, single chicken, triple cheese What-A-Burger with extra jalepenos, green chile, extra onions, no mustard, and mayo. I ordered that just to see what they could do... and I got it all. No other fast food joint could you ask to combine a multitude of stuff like that and expect to get it. The cashier didn't bat an eye, didn't go get a manager, just BAM, "that'll be your entire wallet sir." You get exactly what they advertise.

Whataburger is famous for their way of making burgers....Mustard, Lettuce, Tomato's, Pickles and Onions. That is what most of the customers want when they come to Whataburger. Now how the WAB you went to does I do not know, but at our WAB we have had some pretty creative sandwhiches. When someone comes in and ask for a #1 we give them what they asked for, but I have had people come in and ask for a what-a-chicken with 2 patties on it and we make it happen. I have had one customer come in and ask for a double meat double cheese with onion rings on the burger with BBQ sauce. Granted you will be charged for the onion rings and if we can't fit them all on your burger we'll give you the rest on the side ( we won't cheat you), but we did it. Maybe next time you go in there be creative. Know what you want to do and ask them if they will do it. If they have the product they will probably do it, as long as it falls within their safety guidelines (like no rare burgers). You can be creative but you can not expect them to break the law. Also another sugesstion is, if you are being REALLY creative and it might take time to make it...call ahead. This will save you time of waiting. Hope this works out for you. Good luck!

they make their burgers to order, cooked as orders are placed. they will "create" anything you ask for on your order to specification. I don't understand what your complaint is. McD or the king will have pre-cooked burgers and it takes an act of heaven to get a fresh one. At whataburger ingredients are fresh and plentiful. As far as a condiment bar goes, imagine what the sanitary conditions of the floor, walls etc would look like within 1/2 hour of each hourly clean-up on the hour. Better you should go to a picnic-then you can "create" your own hot off the grill. LMAO at this report!
