Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I am writing this document as a warning for anyone considering taking a cert T.E.S.O.L. course at a TEFL training college based in Windsor. I took my course at the London branch in Ramillies Street, off Oxford Street. In my opinion, the staff (Nickie and Robert at the training centre and Ashley at head office) were less than helpful and unresponsive to my concerns about the safety of loose wiring near the kettle in the kitchen, although this was mended after about eight weeks. After being referred, and paying more money to repeat a few pieces of practical work and complete some of the written work, the staff made it very difficult to complete my qualification. I had to chase the staff up for six weeks to get times and dates for the lessons I was to teach and observations to attend. Being shouted at on the phone told I was not a customer by Ashley, the first lesson that I was due to teach did not take place, costing me time and money and was moved to a time two days later.

The second lesson was moved to an earlier date with no warning. When I received a borderline mark I was told that I should not attend the third lesson and could not be entered for the moderation, both of which had been paid for. I originally asked to pay for Trinity College's moderation fee twice, but after some time I managed to have this waived. You could speculate whether Windsor TEFL passed this moderation fee on. At the moment I have passed the practical requirements for the certTESOL, I have requested my moderation and to be allowed to submit the outstanding written work, but have received no reply.

This a summary of the events since November the 18th 2005, I have included the email correspondence to illustrate my point. The sheer length of it should illustrate just how difficult it can be to organise something simple, when talking to the right people. I hope you find this informative, and take care when choosing where to do a TEFL qualification.

Dear Alex

The next guided observations will be from the first to second weeks in January; provisional dates being Thursday 5, Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11, but get back in contact in a couple of weeks to confirm.

Regards

Robert Weeks

E-mail Two

I was asked to pay a second moderation fee despite not having been moderated the first time, you may ask what they did with that first fee. This is a response to my email questioning this requirement. Eventually it was waived.

Many thanks Alexander and good news. Trinity can be ambiguous in these matters but glad they have granted you this and will make a note.

As we say once you admin fee has been paid we will get things organised with Robert.

Many thanks.

Ashley

E-mail Three

After a prologued series of telephone calls I was told that I did not have to pay a second moderation fee. My reply to this is below. The ?error analysis grids? were promised but not delivered.

E-mail Four

A request for the extra lessons. Two of the three lessons are spurious, they are all over priced if you consider the full length of the course. ?903/120 input hours +say 5 hours to mark the course work = ?7.224 per hour. I was charged ?150 for three lessons to be observed and to be given feed back and for about half of the coursework to be marked. Clearly ?150 is very high compared with the original cost.

Again they seem to be trying to prolong this unnecessarily, now they have my money. Politicians often introduce permanent measures as temporary to begin with?

I was considering repeating the lessons I needed to make up on the next available course, but changed my mind.

Dear Alex

I have just been informed that you still want to do your make up

classes

this course, contrary to your previous email.

Therefore, I have managed to create the following spaces on this

course:

Wednesday 11 January 2pm

Monday 23 January 10am

Wednesday 25 January 12pm

(All classes are to be Integrated Skills lessons).

You will also be required to attend the moderation, which will be

either

Thursday 26 or Friday 27.

Dear Alex,

Thank you for your emailed letter. We are sure Robert will also make contact in due course.

As a quick response we will cut to the chase rather than mull over what has happened. What we can say though is post Christmas it does take a little time for students to filter back but as you now see 7+ in classes. Also logistics can depend on student's commitments sometimes.

This aside I have spoken to Robert about your last class and see you feel it was not to a good enough standard. Although you may have been asked to teach when you were not expecting you should be able to turn this in to an advantage. I feel there are still some issues about your teaching.

For this reason I will sit in your next class for a time to assess the feedback you and I have been given.

We look forward to seeing you next week.

With kind regards,

Ashley

Emails have always been CCed to you.

So we don't get further into dialogue about rights and wrongs lets just say that you have been given a list of when you can observe.

We all have a diary note too of when you will be teaching your final lesson so we can confirm whether you have come up to the Trinity standard and then entered for Moderation.

Please do not complicate things and stick to the dates you are due in.

If we keep things simple hopefully we can get to an end point when I will be able to assess whether Windsor will put you forward for moderation after your final TP session.

An honest mistake on my part, I should have looked at this more closely in November.

Alex

I was under the impression that you only needed to partly redo the

guided

observations as you needed to redo some of your notes. Are you now

telling

me that you have none of the notes from the classes you observed on the

original course?

As far as the other assignments are concerned, I don't think anything

needs

urgently to be redone, although as you know, the Materials Assignment

will

have to be prepared for presentation to the moderator at the end of

this

course.

Alex.

As was explained on your first course, you need notes of up to FOUR

hours of

teaching for the Guided Observation Journal. I assumed you had most of

it.

If you need to attend another one, there is another hour session this

Wednesday at 10am.

regards

Robert

Following a lesson in which a door was slammed about five times and the students were not advanced enough for the level for the most part. They still have the moderation fee.

Dear Alex,

We would be very happy to put you forward for Moderation. However our trainers will confirm that you still have not passed your TP Unit. The moderator for this reason will take the same view as Windsor TEFL in that they will not consider you.

The course is designed as such to allow trainees to develop their skills in TEFL. You have been given an opportunity to return for more TP practice but your lessons have been discussed at length as you still have not reached the required standard for the course. As you know each unit has to be a "pass" to be moderated.

For this reason you may wish to take stock and return again when you feel you have fully reflected on comments that have been made. You will not be entered for a moderation at this time.

We understand how you may feel but Windsor TEFL cannot and will not be pressurised in to doing what trainees demand.

We look forward to hearing from you in a few months when hopefully we can be satisfied enough that you are suitable for moderation.

With kind regards,

Ashley

Alexander
