I found JCJ Mobile Home Movers online (jcjmobilehomemovers.com/index.htm) and contacted them for a quote to move my mobile home. Over the phone the gentleman (Clayton Codes) estimated it to be about $4000 and asked me to fill out the form with the detailed information about the move at their website. The form on their website did not work so I emailed the information to them at the email address provided on the website ([email protected]). I received a response from Dwylette Tucker, titled as CMHM Administrations with a quote for almost $6500. I asked why the price was so much higher than the estimate and received the response that the route had additional miles due to construction. I also checked into CMHM and found their website which appeared to be legitimate and offered a military discount. Since my husband and I are veterans we figured it would help to get the discount and the website information had military information so I thought they would be reputable. They gave us a 10% discount on the price which brought it down to $5838.12 total. They were insistent to get the 50% deposit of $2919.06 to them ASAP and make sure it was posted in their account.

Once the deposit posted the issues started. The contract stated the move date would be for 8/15 which they delayed as soon as the deposit posted saying they needed more time to obtain the permits. It sounded like a legitimate reason so we pushed the move date to 8/22. When I tried to confirm the move date I was unable to reach them through phone or email for a couple days until I was finally reached by the person claiming to be the owner (Clayton Codes). He said he was on vacation and that is why there were issues getting a hold of anyone. Then he said they were having issues on the other job they had in the area which was causing delays and moved the date to 8/23. In the afternoon of 8/22 he contacted me stating they needed the remaining balance paid since the banks would be closed on the weekend and it was due at the time of hook up to the truck. When the contract stated remaining balance was due at hook up I thought it meant hook up at final location which was the normal deadline for other companies I was getting quotes from. By the time I was able to reach my bank it was already closed so I was unable to make the payment. Of course once again when they thought they were receiving payment they were quick to answer the phone. I told him the banks were closed and it had to wait until Monday or I could pay in a different manner. He said he would call me back but never did.

In the morning of the 23rd I tried calling to confirm the move was still happening since I hadn't heard from him but he didn't answer so I left messages. He finally called me back at 7:30 am when the movers were scheduled to be there at 8 am. He said he would figure something out about making the payment and that the movers needed a certain amount of rest for their log books so they would be there around 10 am. I started trying to reach them around 11 am since no one had arrived and I hadn't received a call that they would be later.

The movers finally showed up around 1 pm saying they didn't have the right equipment for the move and they would have to contact the owner. After being 3 hours later than the already 2 hour delay the driver (Jimmy Chavis Jr.) stated his cell phone needed to be charged to call the owner and they were hungry so they were leaving to get lunch. He told me the owner would call me and they would be back. They never returned.

The owner, Clayton Codes, called telling me they didn't know the extra equipment was needed even though I specifically told them the situation of the winding driveway needing at least rollers to move the home in my initial email request and phone conversations with Clayton Codes and Dwylette Tucker. He tried charging me an extra $400 but then went down to $200. To just get it done with I agreed with the extra $200. Then he said he needed the payment right away to pay his crew before any work was done and to send a money gram to the driver Jimmy Chavis Jr. Since the contract stated the payment had to be made at time of hook up, I told him I would not make the payment until at least the crew was there starting the work. He said he would call me back. After a few minutes he called back saying he couldn't get the equipment until Monday 8/25 and would have to delay the move again.

When I returned home I emailed him stating I would not pay the balance until the contract stated and asked for more information such as the driver's license number and his business license number. He replied by email that he was insulted that I implied they were playing games and decided to break the contract. He said he would return any portion of the deposit that had not been spent on expenses already. I replied that I expected the entire deposit since no work was done and he broke the contract for no reason. I have not received any of the deposit back or any response from him or anyone from their company.

All I want is my deposit back and to be done with it so I can find a reputable company to move our home. I have the emails to and from them saved in my email and the voice messages saved on my voice mail as well proving this is who I talked to and what was said and done. The contact information I have for the company is listed below:

I’m sorry that it takes going to a site like this to get a response from you Mr. Codes. It is not about ruining your reputation. I explained the situation truthfully so others would be aware of the situation I went through with your company and decide on their own if they want to do business with you and your company. As far as whether you are truly willing to do what it takes to make me satisfied, I want my deposit back. Your crew did no work what so ever except to drive from your other job you claimed to have in the area to the job site, walked on the property saying they couldn’t do the job, and leaving within minutes because supposedly their phone battery was dead and they were hungry after showing up over 3 hours late from the time you said they would be there. Any delays in the transport were on your part or the last job’s part so I am not responsible for the fees associated with them. I am also not responsible for any costs after you broke the contract. You know the information to return my deposit. You also know I requested our correspondence to be through email so there is no question to what is agreed upon or said. You say you are willing to do what it takes. It will take getting my deposit back. I’m sorry your company had expenses but you chose to break the contract so I am not responsible for them.

#4REBUTTAL Owner of company

My name is Clayton Codes. I'm the owner of CMHM. Its very upsetting that one could go on a site like this and try to ruien the reputation of a company. I want to start out by saying we did all we could do for this customer. She failed to mention her job site was in IA and my crew traveled from SC to  do the job. Clearly if we were out to screw her, we wouldnt have driven 1900 miles! She said she told my secratary that we needed additional equipment but thats not so. When my crew arrived they knew immediately they couldnt do the job. My guys work off of commission and no way would they have driven that many miles not to do the job. Futhermore, no way would I have sent 2 trucks and 5 men that far for nothing. I did mention to her that I'd refund any monies if there was any left after all expenses. Sadly for her and moreso myself, it cost me more than the deposit she sent. I've been in business for more than 40 years and yes, you'll have customers that arent satisfied but in my contract, it states everything from downtime to blown axles and tires. I'm sorry things happened this way but theres nothing else that could have been done. Me being a business man though that understands the customer is always right, I'm willing to compromise with her. But I wont sit back and allow myself to be slandered! She has my number and I'm willing to do what it takes to make her satisfied.
