6 weeks after my parents returned from Ft. Myers Fl, they recieved a notice in the mail from Dollar Rent a Car (based out of Ft. Myer's airport) stating that while the rental van was in their custody, a toll road violation incurred. The violation form stated the toll fee was not paid on the Dade-Miami Expressway near Miami Airport.

A picture sent with the violation showed an unidentifiable vehicle with part of the license plate number covered. My parents were no where near Miami Airport on the date of the supposed violation ( nor were they their the entire trip), yet dollar rent a car charged their credit card the violation fee of $25 and an administrative fee of $25.

Is this a rental car company scam or Florida state scam? My parents have proof they were not their. Has this happened to anyone else? They were going to pay it but decided to look into it and discovered the fraud. They are from Ohio and not familiar with roads/expressways and just assumed something must of happened when they paid their toll.

Upon notifying friends who were with them, it was discovered that they were actually eating dinner 2 hours away from where and when the toll fee was not paid. They do not know what to do.

Please help.

I recently rented a car from another agency in Cali and they did the same thing to me, when I got home I recieved a letter saying I ran a toll and the toll was $2.50 but now it's a $57.00 fine and to pay thru a toll toad company that handles there affairs, I threw it away and reported my credit card stolen so they can't use it and the heck with them, I know I didn't go thru a toll or was anywhere near the toll rd in question. It's just another rip off and I swear if I travel again, I will cab it everywhere. It would be less money to do so.

It was a Florida Error

The rental company would not be making any money off of this. It was an error by the state. The way it typically works is there is a toll violation (someone ran a gate without paying) and a security camera will take a picture. The state department of transportation will then send a bill to whomever they feel is the owner of the vehicle. In this case they made an error in finding the correct owner, probably because of the unreadable license plate. I'm sure if you contact the company's customer service and show proof that you weren't even in the area when the violation occured, they will drop the incident and take proper action with the state for the erroneous charge.

They should dispute the bogus charge with the credit card company! It shouldn't be too difficult to prove. Sounds like Dollar just charged the most convenient customer from around that time period without caring about the facts.
