I purchased a 2006 Trailblazer through the dealership. At the final purchase, I was charged for Gap Coverage and was told that they would also pay the deductable if anything should happen. This was explained to my wife and myself. I read the fine print and it explicitly said otherwise. I also bought the paint and dent coverage at that time. Since then (approx. 4 months) I had to return for service and I was told that the paint and dent coverage was only for manufacturer defects and did not cover anything else. Both of these show a total lack of knowledge on their part.

A defective battery had to be replaced as it was leaking. The engine compartment was not cleaned and as a result the power steering lines were corroded and rusted. I was told these will not be replaced even though the battery was defective.

Through all this, I have been to the dealership 5 times (of which 3 were a waste of time because when I showed up at the "scheduled" time I was told to come back because I wasn't on the schedule. I would never recommend them to anyone.

When it was explained to me and my wife we were told it was $600 but it would also pay our insurance deductible if the vehicle was totaled. After contacting my insurance company they told me they do not know of anyone that provides GAP coverage that would also pay the deductable. Again, I questioned the employee AND their manager and they assured me it was covered. When I pointed out that it states in the documentation that it did not cover the deductable, they were dumbfounded. I requested a refund of the amount and eventually received it.

The paint and dent coverage is only for manufacture defects? You have to pay to cover what they should themselves? What a bunch of idiots. Do these "manufacture defective dents" just magically appear? I mean I understand the paint can be defective and you wouldn't know for a few years or so. But dents? It's funny to think that you should have to purchase coverage for a problem of the manufacture. Maybe you could go to another dealership and try to get the battery problem covered. That is so unacceptable.

This will only kick in if your vehicle is totalled by your insurance company. The GAP insurance would then pay the difference between what you owe on the vehicle, and the amount your insurance company is willing to settle with you for, as well as the amount of your deductible which reduced the amount of your settlement. A very good product if you are "upside down" at the time of purchase, however most dealers typically charge $400-$600 for this product when it only costs them $125-175 on average. You can purchase GAP coverage at a lower rate from an outside source than you will pay at the dealership.
