Last week I sold my car (1993 Lincoln Mark VIII) the guy wanted me to have the check engine light fixed before he was going to pick the car up this weekend (1-19-02). I told him I would take the car over to Pepboys to have the computer diagnosed to tell me why the check engine light was coming on. I dropped the car off on Tuesday night.

The were going to do the work in the morning. That morning i got a phone call from Pepboys. The said that there was a problem with the car. He told me that the they took the car for a test drive to see the check engine light (i also told them there was times when the throttle did not respond).

He told me that they were doing 50mph when the hood comes open! The hood is fiberglass and fairly light. The hood went traight up and broke the shocks. The hood went against the winsheild cracking it in many places. The hood was damged in many spots. The hood was very flexiable and was cracked in about 6 spots. The hood is not reusable. The glass also had to be fixed.

I meet the Servise manager at 4:00. He tells me i should drive the car and get three estimates. THE CAR IS NOT DRIVABLE, THE HOOD DOESN'T SHUT NOR COULD IT PLUS THE WINSHEILD WAS CRAKED IN EACH CORNER AND WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO SEE THROUGH. I told then that i'm not taking th car like it was.

The servise manager even told us that the hood was still ok, he didn't even look at it closley to see that there are many cracks under the hood. He told us the Main Manager would be in the next morning and would call us. He also said that he would have the winsheild replaced the next morning.

I get home at 4:00 and call then since i heard no responce at all. He said they put a new winsheild in and that i could come pick it up. I then asked for the main manager and he was not in today. The now want me to take the car with the broken hood. If i drive the car the hood will come roight back up because it's so damged that you couldn't strap it down. They said they would put bungee cords on it. I told then i want to talk to the main manager. He told me he will be in on friday morning. They want me to take the car to get estimates! THEY DID IT, they should be behind it 100%. Not once did they say they were sorry. It was a accident and accidents happen.

But they don't know how to handle it. The car is still at there shop. I qoute had the car sold, who knows if he'll still want it. Plus currently they didn't give me a rental car or even ask. I asked them for the District Managers office and they couldn't give it to me. I called another pepboys, and he gave me the number! I need to know what there going to do, and when my car will get fixed. Please any help will do.

Thanks

David

Autoshop wants YOU to make an estimate? Please... Once you take it from the lot you on your own without evidence. Read other complaints - when THEY brake something they charge people for parts/labor. WTF

Asking you to get estimates doesn't seem too bad, really. Their insurance will want to pay you off quickly, but they also want to do it as rapidly and cheaply as they can. If this goes to court you may win something, but it won't make up for your trouble and time wasted fighting the shop. The judge will ask them what they did and they will tell the judge you refused to get estimates. That alone may cost you your case. I tow cars all the time with the hood bungied down, and drive them with busted winshields. Your not driving across the country, just to a body shop. I half expect, because your car is 14 years old, that you'll end up giving them the car for around $300, no matter what shape it's in.

They said it was an "accident"? People usually call police when accidents happen ... just in case for future legal proceedures you need a police report ... just a hint ;)
