I have been banking with WAMU for a little while. I recently had to change banks and requested to close my account at WAMU. They had me send them a written and signed request (which I did). They then would not close my account because I went negative on my balance. They kept charging me overdraft fees. I would pay the account back up to zero and they still would not close it. They kept allowing people to take money out of the account and then charged me more overdraft fees. I finally asked them to put a hold on my account so I could pay it off and they could close it, they denied my request. I then made a transfer from my other bank to close the account once again. They put a hold on my deposit and let someone else take money from my account, putting me in the hole again and charged me another overdraft fee. They are illegally charging overdraft fees and attorney will be contacting them soon if they do not reimburse all of the illegally obtained overdraft fees and close the account. They are messing with the wrong Federal employee. I will keep you updated on what happens next.

Not Certain This Is a Bank Issue

This has more to do with either merchants or others who have automated withdrawls coming from your account. From what you said, this has little to do with the bank. Before you do what normal Federal Employees do and run off in the wrong direction, you might want to spend time figuring out who is taking money from your account first. Once you get that situation settled, then you should be able to close the account normally.

Why were people still taking money out of your account?

Matt, what does this mean...? "They kept allowing people to take money out of the account and then charged me more overdraft fees." And... "They put a hold on my deposit and let someone else take money from my account" And... "They are illegally charging overdraft fees and attorney will be contacting them soon if they do not reimburse all of the illegally obtained overdraft fees and close the account." Who are these people taking money out of your account? Are they people withdrawing money without your authorization? If so, have you contacted the police? Have you alerted the bank about possible fraudulent activity with your account? Are they merchants that you've made purchases from? If so, of course the bank isn't going to permanently close your account until they think that all of your transactions have arrived from ACH. Whether or not the fees are illegal depends on the circumstances surrounding the overdrafts. There simply aren't enough details here to decide.
