I had fallen on some hard times. I just returned to work the beginning of this month. My account with Washington Mutual fell behind at the end of September after being out of work since July.

I was told that if I paid $80 the manager would waive some of the fees that had accrued on the account. Most of my balance is fees. I overdrew the account by $24.88 and was told that I had until 11/27/2008 to get the account caught up to get the help and keep it closed. Well 11/27/2008 is Thanksgiving so it would be 11/26 that I had til. Today is 11/25/2008 and the account was charged off and closed yesterday.

When I called to see what happened I was told that there was nothing that could be done once they close an account. I was also told that there would be no negative reflection to any consumer reporting agency what so ever if I paid the balance now.

Does anyone know if it is true that if you pay an account quickly after charge off that there is no reporting of the account to anyone?

hello. im sorry to hear about your situation. I am an employee of wamu. i know that if the account is charged off, as long as you make the payment to the bank for the amount owed, you will not be reported. the only time the account would go against you, is if it was left in an od status, charged off, never paid and then sent to collections. once the debt is sent to our collections dept, the account is placed in chexxsystem and it starts to reflect negatively against you. I hope this helps! have a nice holiday!!!
