Wolpoff & Abramson, L.L.P. A case of mistaken identity Ripoff Rockville Maryland
After reading a number of complaints about this company, I felt I would share my experience. I began receiving phone calls and letters a couple of years ago claiming I owed them approximately $1800.00. The debt was for a Providian Bank account I've never had. This was obviously a case of mistaken identity and I assummed they would eventually catch the mistake. Well... they didn't, and I became increasingly annoyed by their constant phone messages. I researched my credit report and saw no listing for a Providian Bank whatsoever.
I'm not the type of person who's receptive to a collection agency's morality speech tactics and believe the burden of proof concerning a debt is their responsibility, not mine. I'm not going out of my way to prove anything to them. I too, began to send large amounts of cease and desist letters to them and the calls stopped.
This isn't the first time I've been mistaken for someone else with a similar name. It seems as if collection agencies cast a net out on all of the names in the phone book! What I find disturbing is the thought of someone paying off these debts that don't belong to them.

It was for a account that my grandfather had. He passed a year earlier. The constantly called my home (I took care of him before he passed on so his address and phone was mine) They kept on and on even after i faxed a death certificate to them. My name was not on any paperwork I was not the one who owed it was Just this address and number they had and they tried to tell me I had to pay. There ws no will or estate he died with just enough to pay his burial. They would call me 10 times a day from 8 AM till 10 at night. Asking for him Over and Over I did some digging and found on the net that a collector can not harrass. I mean these people were calling every hour and acted like if they kept calling it would make my Pappy rise up from the grave to pay them. I was Upset to say the least When I found that in fact i could SUE them for it and left them know I would do Just that i never got another call from them If more people knew the laws these jerks would not be able to harrass folks into possibly paying something they did not owe.
