Send them a letter asking for documentation (something with your wife's signature) such as a contract in order to validate this "debt". Believe me..they will not be able to validate. As far as I know, Verizon didn't exist in 1993, so that should be one helluva neat trick if they can validate...not to mention that if Verizon did exist in 1993, there is this nasty little old thing called "Statute of Limitations" getting in the way. Boyajian is a bottomfeeder offshoot of JBC Legal, who is well-known to the FTC and many state authorities for numerous violations of the FDCPA and FCRA. Jack Hagop Boyajian is NOT licensed to practice law in Alabama (is licensed in California, but seems to be based in New Jersey now), so you might want to notify the State Bar of Alabama regarding this, as well as the State Bar of California. I would also file a complaint with the Attorney General and the FTC. Please don't feed the bottomfeeder.
