I pre paid a Gold's Gym membership to December, 2008. I last worked out at the gym in late April '07, left NYC, visited family and moved to upstate New York, at least fifty miles from any Gold's Gym. The contract states membership will be canceled if member moves more than fifty miles and sends a certified letter to Gold's requesting cancellation. I did send the letter, addressed to the assistant manager at Gold's NYC, Erica Evans. Someone at Gold's signed the postal receipt on August 6, 2007. Since then, Gold's has not contacted me by phone, email or letter. They have chosen to ignore my request for refund of unused membership dues. I'm filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and other agencies.

I was a Gold's Gym member in Tampa Florida for ten years. When I moved, the owner of that Gold's honored the agreement and was prompt about closing my membership when I requested it. He told me each Gold's gym is individually owned. Obviously, the owners of Gold's NYC are not doing right by their members. If I ever move back to NYC, I'll avoid Gold's gym like the plague. There's no excuse for the delay. I prepaid so there's no EFT to discontinue. All they gotta do is refund my remaining dues. They don't even have the decency to communicate with me. They simply want to keep my money --in other words, rip me off!

I filed this report re the lengthy process of closing my gym membership. I'm happy to now report my Gold's gym membership has been canceled and I received a refund of unused dues. My complaint was never about the gym's facilities. If I lived near a Gold's gym I'd join again. It's a well equipped and well maintained gym. My complaint was that it took over two months to get the cancellation processed. To anyone having similar problems: Find out the manager's /owner's name and communicate directly to that person.
