In December 2003, I gave my husband a gym membership for Christmas. In 2004, the membership ran out and we became month to month customers. I decided to quit going so I went in and filed the termination papers. For six months following the signing of those papers, Gold's continued to take money from my account. Despite going in and signing papers on two occasions. I finally had to report my card lost and get a new one to keep them from continuing to take the money.

My husband continued to go to the gym as a month to month customer for another year but always paid by check. In October 2005 he was transferred to North Georgia. He went in and spoke with the manager, Alex, who had him fill out termination papers. We continued to get a monthly bill from Golds for the following four months.

Each month I would call and go over the scenerio and would be reassured that it was taken care of. We went in a total of two times and signed termination letters. Sent a registered letter, in addition to responding to each monthly bill. I would write on the bill, that we had terminated the membership and why and send it in.

This morning I got a call from a collection agency. The caller id said "State Attorney" but the caller refused to give me the name or address of the collection agency. He said he "had" me and there was nothing to dispute. He had a signed contract and would be suing my husband for the money he owed. I told him that by law he had to provide the amount due, the name and address of the company he was representing and I had the right to dispute the claim. He responded that I had no rights. When I verified his name he laughed at me and said, it isn't my real name. He hung up on me three different times.

I called Gold's in Stockbridge to tell them that their collection agency was acting illegally and again explained the situation to a new manager, David. While he was nice and understanding, he offered no help to resolve this matter. He did tell me the name of the collection agency was Advance. But I have no idea who and where they are because they have not sent one letter.

I filed a claim with the FTC today about the collection agency and will file one about Golds. The moral of the story. STAY AWAY FROM GOLD'S GYM.
